|
|
Hi to all,
I reported the problem here https://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=31715&p=170887
Basically I'm new to Gentoo and Gentoo based distros. I recently installed Sabayon and I am experiencing a slow boot since some days while the boot was fast enough at the beginning.
At the beginning of the days in which I experienced such a problem i just saw the booting time was so slow: I just saw the plymouth screen and the progress bar running so slowly. Now I also get some messages on the screen, please see the following screenshot.
The latest dmesg is reported here http://pastebin.sabayon.org/pastie/16846
What should I do?
thanks,
regards. |

Hi,
Did you shutdown the system in the correct way ?
There seems to be a message related to pm-resume , just after a long pause.
Maybe you can try to manually shutdown from the commandline to make sure you really shutdown and not 'suspend' (using shutdown -h now), and see if this makes any difference.

Those are the screenshots of the messages appearing few moments after the plymouth and automatically disappearing after a while without me taking any actions.
http://postimg.org/gallery/cl8jk57a/
As you can see, the first screenshot reports the messages maybe asking me to take some action. the second screenshot shows the booting process going on after a while despite me taking no action. |

Ok, but the system waiting for some input from you is a different thing than "booting being slow".
You probably need to set the default keymap somewhere, but this might be Sabayon specific.... |

Sure, it is different if considered alone. However it is not in my case. In fact, as I wrote at the beginning, the request for input is just recent while at the beginning no input request had been shown. The boot is slow in any case, with or without the input request, compared to when I installed sabayon less than one month ago.
Maybe there's some difference after running
the difference is that the slow part seems to be moved toward the end of the booting process while before it was toward the beginning. Maybe a little bit faster, but however still slower than the beginning when I fresh installed Sabayon. |

Since it is unlikely that everything is slower, and more likely that one process causes the delay, you need to determine (by watching the screen) at what point the delay occurs.
Best test might be to temporarily remove some of the starting processes from the default runlevel (like any graphical environment) and see if that helps.
You can see what is added to default using Code: | rc-update show default | .
This can help to determine what process is causing the delay: Is it boot of the system itself, or is it any other service you added later... |

lexflex, maccabbeo ... Sabayon uses systemd as the default init system, not openrc ... and while it is based on Gentoo it is not Gentoo, and not supported by Gentoo. The problem (as we see above) is that the difference is enough that Gentoo users are not going to know what changes, defaults, etc, Sabayon uses, and so make assumptions. If you're using Sabayon then you should look to the Sabayon community for support, and if posting here you should post to "Unsupported Software" (and I'm requesting moderators move this there).
best ... khay |

It is resuming from disk; therefore, some time is spent on doing that. |

Why resuming? I shut down the system via 'shutdown -h now' before restarting... |

Taking a look at the latest dmesg I think the problems may be here, where there are the following gaps:
- a gap between the 32th and the 84th seconds
- a gap between the 84th and the 120th seconds
- a gap between the 122th and the 136th seconds
- a gap between the 136th and the 155th seconds
- a gap between the 156th and the 186th seconds
there there's a video of the boot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BislMIZ1QNc

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Unsupported Software. Not about Gentoo so it fits better here.

Your video shows a delay for keymap entry at ~00:17, a file system check at ~00:35 and another file system check at ~1:42. |

So? Is everything "normal"? Just in case, why I had no such delays at the beginning when Sabayon was fresh installed about one month ago?
Last but not the least, what about the gaps I market in my previous post?
Thanks. |

Depends on whether you want them to happen; for me (on Gentoo), it does never ask for keymap and a file system check happens only every 30 boots or so.
Some gaps correspond to the times; others do not, it's hard to tell what's going on when plymouth hides it but I think it are the file system checks going on in the background. |

Guess best would be to temporarily disable the splashscreen/plymouth to see where exactly it pauses.
Than 'fix' that specific problem ( or, if it is a scheduled diskcheck, you keep it).
Alex.

Forget about that, I now learned from khayyam that indeed Sabayon uses systemd, so no rc-update there |

How could i disable plymouth?
I tried with
Code: | plymouth --hide-spash |
but it did not disable the plymouth |

I just realized that Sabayon is not mounting the swap partition at startup. Why? Maybe that is the problem?
Code: | cat /etc/fstab

Hello,
We are not a sabayon support forum. Please avoid to cross-post here and try to push us there.
I merged all your Sabayon messages in one thread, please don't pollute the Gentoo forum. _________________ Kind regards,

Hi XavierMiller,
sorry for being annoying here. I did not think it was out of topic. Actually, as far as I can imagine, installing a printer on Gentoo should be the same as installing on Gentoo derivates (drivers act more or less at kernel level). If you think I'm wrong then please show me why it is not the same, I mean why you think installing a printer on Gentoo is different than installing a printer on Sabayon.
Otherwise, please put the posts back to their original places and let the others reply to help me.
Thanks for your understanding.
Regards. |

Nope. What I don't like, is that you tell you opened a message on the Sabayon forum, and spread the solving of your problems on 2 forums.
Please don't do that, this gives a bad image of the other forum, or can lead to have incomplete answers (reply part 1 in forum A and reply part 2 in forum B).
So, ask here without mixing parts of Sabayon forum here, or stay on the Sabayon forum. _________________ Kind regards,
