I must have installed Gentoo six or seven years ago. Not sure what happened to that installation. Though I had ambition, I was a bit inexperienced with Linux at the time. That's not to say I'm experienced now. When is anybody ever experienced enough for anything? In any case, I'm back now and ready to experience all this distro has to offer. I feel that, at this point, my ability to maintain Gentoo depends more on patience than knowledge, but I've been loving it so far. My favorite distros are Debian and Arch, or have been for a period of time at least. Now I'm running Gentoo with Fluxbox, Nvidia's proprietary drivers, and the nine must have apps I use on every Linux installation: luakit, irssi, nitrogen, sublime-text, leafpad, gftp, foxit, spacefm, and mplayer. And of course compilers and python and such. So far, I haven't added many USE flags. Just -qt4, -kde, and -bluetooth. And I added -bluetooth before I even knew it was a real flag. :P

Also, I emerged my kernel sources from gentoo-sources and configured them to my liking, but I was thinking about downloading the latest vanilla kernel and using it. The gentoo docs said something about gentoo-sources containing special optimizations for Gentoo linux? Could anyone explain further? What are these optimizations?

Oh, and hello everyone! :D

welcome seoneal7

From the make menuconfig help:

"In order to boot Gentoo Linux a minimal set of config settings needs to
be enabled in the kernel; to avoid the users from having to enable them
manually as part of a Gentoo Linux installation or a new clean config,
we enable these config settings by default for convenience.

Currently this only selects TMPFS, DEVTMPFS and their dependencies.
TMPFS is enabled to maintain a tmpfs file system at /dev/shm, /run and
/sys/fs/cgroup; DEVTMPFS to maintain a devtmpfs file system at /dev.

Some of these are critical files that need to be available early in the
boot process; if not available, it causes sysfs and udev to malfunction.

To ensure Gentoo Linux boots, it is best to leave this setting enabled;
if you run a custom setup, you could consider whether to disable this."

Also support for openrc. Other than that it's vanilla.

Good look with the use flags
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml

imho it's best to only set things which a lot of packages use in /etc/make.conf. I recommend you emerge gentoolkit and use eix and or equery uses {package name} to research flags and set them per package in /etc/portage/package.use. It's tidier and helps if something breaks as a result.

- The gentoo-sources offer a couple of original CONFIG_* options that will automatically preset a couple of CONFIG_* standard options depending on the device manager / init system you intend running.
- Depending on the setting of the experimental use flag, the gentoo-sources also offer :
the opportunity to select the Budget Fair Queueing IO scheduler,
more choices for the -mtune parameter used by gcc when compiling the kernel.

BTW, you get all these... AND much more... with the ck-sources.

Congrats seoneal7. The best choice money can't buy!

And, by the way, if you need help : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-941030.html
And as it is a Gentoo supported kernel, you'll also be welcome on bugzilla.
