Hi guys,

i try to install MATE following this wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/MATE
after install xorg-server, i just add USE flag: X, extras,
then use emerge mate-base/mate directly...
but get a problem with mate-extra/mate-character-map-1.6.0...
can anyone please give a hand? thanks!

What are the contents of /var/tmp/portage/mate-extra/mate-character-map-1.6.0/temp/automake-1.out?

aha, pleasure with it! the MATE install finished! i entered the desktop!
i just could not understand, why it is so troublesome just emerge gnome2, not gnome3?

Because GNOME 2 in the Portage tree shares a lot of package directories with GNOME 3, it needs a meta package or a mask to stay with GNOME 2 and avoiding GNOME 3 from being brought in; given that the GNOME team has expressed to no further want to maintain GNOME 2, it will also face removal over time from the Portage tree. Continuation of GNOME 2 depends on people interested to copy it, develop it and maintain it further, as it faces compatibility and security issues as time passes by an the rest upgrades; for this reason, I've decided to bring infirit's work on MATE to the Portage tree as a maintained alternative with an active upstream.
