I have scoured google on this one. I have radeon driver for an ATI card, and I am trying to set up desktop effects like cube. Every time I try to switch from raster to OpenGL, it switches back to raster.

I have confirmed radeon is loaded, and tried all kinds of things with CONFIG files, but it still doesn't work.

Any ideas? Can give more details as needed.

What version of kernel, Xorg, video driver, mesa and kwin do you use?

its a new install:

Kernel is 3.12.13
KDE is 4.11.5

KDE itself reports this as graphics:

Direct rendering: 3D accelerator unknown
Driver
Vendor VMware, Inc
Renderer Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 256 bits)
OpenGL/ES Version 2.1 Mesa 10.0.4
Kernel Module unknown

Not sure how to pull xorg, but like I said it's a new install.

It seems there shouldn't be "unknown" in there, it should be radeon, but I have no idea how to tell X to find that other than shouting at the screen, which didn't work either.

This is a very uninformed and possibly irrelevant response, but for me with intel graphics, I can't make the switch from xrender to opengl unless I first disable desktop effects (alt+shift+f12) otherwise it fails. Worth a try even if it's absurdly simplistic , I've been through this headache too and in fact I gave up because with opengl set it changes my wallpaper on every login.

I have the same issue after upgrade to gentoo-sources-3.14.0. I found this bugreport: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75723

Can you post /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/kdm.log?

This means that you do not have 3D acceleration. Make sure that you have the appropriate firmware and kernel options.

Also you need to have CONFIG_TMPFS_POSIX_ACL=y or add your user to the "video" group in order to use 3D acceleration as non-root.

Here I see it's complaining I don't have radeonsi -- intriguing, first I have heard of radeonsi, will need to search the interwebs about that maybe I have the wrong driver? I don't recall seeing radeonsi on the wiki at all.

I think I see partly what is going on, I did emerge radeon-ucode, and I think it may have an older driver. I initially tried to build all this in the kernel, loading the files directly in, but it failed. So then I changed to module, allowing it to load as needed.

However, it couldn't find the correct files when I used linux-firmware. It seems that neither linux-firmware nor radeon-ucode has the correct driver files for my video card, which I didn't really think was that new.

I can try fglrx driver, but the one that emerge wants is beta and I try to avoid too much beta ...

Make sure you have VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi" and then `emerge -N media-libs/mesa` again; to be save `emerge -N @world` might also be a good idea to rebuild other libraries that use VIDEO_CARDS too.

Thanks, Tom.

Adding VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi" did it all.

Maybe that should be added to the radeon wiki? I don't recall seeing it. I think it's for 7000+ cards, but I have to go mow the lawn and don't have time to look that up.

Thanks for all the help, guys/

It is there on https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon and it seems to suggest you might want VIDEO_CARDS="radeon radeonsi" instead of VIDEO_CARDS="radeonsi".

Yeah I see it now, it's easy to miss.

Regardless, "radeonsi" by itself seems to work. I have also tweaked infinality to my viewing pleasure.

I am happy with my gentoo appearance now...and it's time to crash it with some other upgrades or updates, since I can't have a stable system I am happy with.
