When I upgraded my KDE system to 4.12.4, I got a message about kdnssd and zeroconf-ioslave blocking each other. I deleted zeroconf-ioslave on he assumption that this would resolve itself. A couple of weeks have gone by and the problem still is there. I wonder if anybody has thoughts on how to fix it.

Here is the blockage:

    bopper jc # emerge --newuse --deep --update --with-bdeps=y world
    Calculating dependencies... done!
    [ebuild U ] app-arch/unrar-5.0.14 [4.2.4]
    [ebuild U ] virtual/libffi-3.0.13-r1 [3.0.11] ABI_X86="(64%*) (-32) (-x32)"
    [ebuild N ~] kde-base/kdnssd-4.12.3 USE="zeroconf (-aqua) -debug"
    [ebuild R *] dev-lang/python-exec-2.9999 PYTHON_TARGETS="(pypy*) (-pypy2_0%*)"
    [ebuild R *] dev-lang/python-exec-0.9999 PYTHON_TARGETS="(pypy*) (-pypy2_0%*)"
    [ebuild R ] dev-python/python-exec-10000.2 PYTHON_TARGETS="(pypy*) (-pypy2_0%*)"
    [ebuild R ~] dev-python/pycups-1.9.66 PYTHON_TARGETS="-pypy%"
    [ebuild R ] dev-python/pyxdg-0.25 PYTHON_TARGETS="-pypy%"
    [blocks B ] kde-base/kdnssd:4 ("kde-base/kdnssd:4" is blocking kde-base/zeroconf-ioslave-4.12.4)

    * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
    * installed at the same time on the same system.

    (kde-base/zeroconf-ioslave-4.12.4::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=kde-base/zeroconf-ioslave-4.12.4:4[aqua=] (>=kde-base/zeroconf-ioslave-4.12.4:4[-aqua]) required by (kde-base/kcontrol-4.12.4::gentoo, installed)

    (kde-base/kdnssd-4.12.3::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    >=kde-base/kdnssd-4.11.5:4[aqua=] (>=kde-base/kdnssd-4.11.5:4[-aqua]) required by (kde-base/kdenetwork-meta-4.11.5::gentoo, installed)

    For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
    section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

    http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

I have repeatedly tried unmasking both packages to see if new versions would fix the problem. So far this hasn't happened.

kde-base/zeroconf-ioslave replaces kde-base/kdnssd in kde-base/kdenetwork-meta-4.12.4.

When there is a blocker, it has been set by the developer because the packages (or the specific versions thereof) are not known to work together; in this case removal of one of both is necessary, sometimes an upgrade or downgrade to a version that doesn't have this blocker is possible. For the latter, you can look into the ebuilds in the package's directory to see which one specify the blocker; blockers can be found in the DEPEND, RDEPEND and/or PDEPEND variables, they have a ! or !! in front of the package ATOM syntax.

The problem was that kdenetwork-meta was set for version 4.11.4 rather than 4.12.4. It is working now.

Thank you for your help!
