Hello,

Weird behavior from X server since a short while, (probably last emerge, with nvidia-drivers and xorg-server updates..) : one boot of my box out of 2, (averagely), X fails to start... Because, says it, of NVIDIA kernel module... Here what it spits :

Isn't it odd that it uses VT number 3 ? It usually pops on VT number 7. It does when I get lucky, and the box starts normally..

I followed the guide https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVidia/nvidia-drivers to prepare the kernel for build.
Code:
# emerge -pv nvidia-drivers x11-base/xorg-server

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.15.0:0/1.15.0  USE="ipv6 kdrive nptl suid udev xorg -dmx -doc -minimal (-selinux) -static-libs -tslib -unwind -xnest -xvfb" 0 kB
[ebuild   R    ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-334.21  USE="X acpi multilib tools -pax_kernel -uvm" 0 kB

Code:
# lspci | grep -i nvidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 660] (rev a1)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1)

I did try to add in xorg.conf device-section
Code:
BusID           "PCI:01:00.0"

But no improvement, same behavior

Code:
# emerge --info

So, every time I turn on my box, I wonder if I'm gonna get a tty black screen with a prompt, or a graphical environment to log in.... Next time it happens, I'll get dmesg.
So far, any suggestion welcome

The kernel log you can see by running dmesg ... do you see anything there?

During bootup do you see any messages about the kernel module?

Very weird indeed though... flaky behavior is always nasty.

The VT3 thing is very odd, sounds almost like it's trying to start X before agetty.

On a gdm system, it should be fine for the machine to never run agetty...
One thing that's common with the two is that it errors in the CPU frequency detection...which is odd... Is this repeatable with different versions of the kernel or not? What happens if you disable cpufreq?

Are both dumps from when the machine fails to start X11? Is there any errors when it does start just fine?

Yes, they are ; it's actually the very same dump from last time X11 failed. I've split it in 2 parts, with redundancy, which may end up confusing the reader.

Absolutely not

I didn't have this issue with linux-3.10.25-gentoo. Also, I should mention, in case it'd be related, that I've had to change, in /etc/default/grub, "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" for "real_init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd", when I went on with linux-3.12.13-gentoo, (see my post https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-987146-highlight-.html). Whereas it did boot with systemd and linux-3.10.25-gentoo, i t wouldn't, with linux-3.12.13-gentoo, until I change "init" for "real_init". I'm still puzzled about this.

I'm gonna try to recompile both kernels linux-3.12.13-gentoo and linux-3.10.25-gentoo, and see how they behave....

Well.... I found the solution : removed linux-3.12.13-gentoo and went back to linux-3.10.25-gentoo, that I recompiled along with nvidia-drivers. So far, no unpleasant surprise at boot.....
but this new one : no networking anymore. New story, new thread.... I'm getting tired
