Hello, on my Thinkpad R40, I have installed Gentoo with all of my hardware working except the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 card, which gives me this in dmesg:
Code:
eht%d: Firmware 'ipw2100-1.3.fw' not available or load failed.
eth%d: ipw2100_get_firmware failed: -2

What is the issue with '-2'? I've tried looking it up. Also, the 'ipw2100-1.3.fw' file that fails to load is indeed in my /lib/firmware directory, along with the other files that sys-firmware/ipw2100 installs. I copied them to the /lib/firmware/intel directory too, to be sure. My ipw2100 kernel module is compiled into the kernel (*), not modularized (M) if this matters. Can anyone help with this?

PS: It's not a problem with ALL firmware, as my IBM Trackpoint firmware loaded up fine. Could it be due to there being no "LICENSE" file for the ipw2100? I've looked at many ipw2100 threads, but most are before it even became a kernel module!

I'm just guessing here (it's been a while since I've used Gentoo on my old computer with the similar ipw2200), but perhaps the kernel is trying to load the driver before the filesystem is available to load the firmware.

From the help of CONFIG_IPW2100:
Quote:
It is recommended that you compile this driver as a module (M)
rather than built-in (Y). This driver requires firmware at device
initialization time, and when built-in this typically happens
before the filesystem is accessible (hence firmware will be
unavailable and initialization will fail). If you do choose to build
this driver into your kernel image, you can avoid this problem by
including the firmware and a firmware loader in an initramfs.
