Why are old new items still around on Gentoo?
Code:
# eselect news list
News items:
  [1]      2009-04-18  Generation 1 Java Setup Deprecated
  [2]   N  2011-10-15  Upgrade to libpng15
  [3]      2012-01-06  systemd /usr migration
  [4]      2012-05-21  Portage config-protect-if-modified default
  [5]      2012-11-06  PYTHON_TARGETS deployment
  [6]      2013-06-07  Portage preserve-libs default
[7]      2013-08-23  Language of messages in emerge logs and output
[8]      2013-09-27  Separate /usr on Linux requires initramfs

For crying out loud "Generation 1 Java Setup Deprecated" is almost 5 years old. It seems that the news items are in dire need of clean up.

Have you run eselect news purge all anytime in, say, the past 5 years?

EDIT: Corrected command.

Looking on my other box that I installed back in Jan 2013 I see it has the same old news items too (all except for the libpng one).

I would think that a simple "eselect news purge" would fix the problem.

News items probably get pulled down on a new install from some set time ago.
