Steam runs well and games too (I've only tried l4d2), but today i noticed some changes that forced me to reinstall. First of all, /home/user's owner had changed from user to root, but i guess that might have been due to me chmoddig a+x the installing script. Then I reinstalled steam from the user instead of root, and what happened was that it failed loading some OpenGL stuff. I'm not using ATI so the workaround didn't matter. I would like to know: is that normal? Should one always install steam from root? Why can't nvidi driver access to some files and let OpenGL fail if the user is added to video group?

Teegrins, gastromush!

I realise, that this is a bit late, but here goes something.

I believe the answer should be a big fat no; one should not install Steam as root, just as one should not run any other user applications as root. That is of course when not using Portage fer it.

With that said, how are you installing Steam? I think this is currently the only thing I probably would recommend not using Portage for (I still appreciate the efforts of those writing ebuilds for it, however). That is, I would only use the provided script (modified to suit my needs).

Do you mean the owner of /home/user or something within? In any case, that certainly should not have anything to do with the Steam install script. I'm almost certain that running Steam as root will definitely mess up Steam related files, at least if it happens to install updates or any other files during that run.

Just a few, quick thoughts before I forget to post 'em again.

Hello, and sorry for my English,

Steam doen't work on my laptop (MSI GE70). 3D acceleration is enabled and works fine (glxgears give me more than 14k fps), but I can't launch steam. I have tried with or without the "steamruntime" USE flag, I have tried the steam and the gamerlay overlays, and I have tried a manual install, but nothing work.

I think the problem may be here:

Quote:
*** glibc detected *** /home/phibrizo/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam: free(): invalid pointer: 0x082d5b80 ***

Any ideas ?

Hi there. I'm using the steam overlay and just installed steam-meta. Now steam is installing itself.
But I'm a bit worried about the steam-meta ebuild use flags. I've seen there are a few game specific useflags. How do I enable them? The look like "special" use flags, like VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES, for example.
Should I just add STEAMGAMES="tf2 source-games etc" to my make.conf file?

Also, the wiki should be updated to include this information. May I do it?

@Phibrizo: Hm, strange problem. Are you using the normal stable versions of Xorg, etc.?

@Spidey: STEAMGAMES="..." should work, afair, but just try playing the games first without enabling the use flags. Don't add this to the wiki. Overlay-specific stuff should go into the README but before I have to clean up a few things in the games-meta ebuild.

@Phibrizo:

Quote:
Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty)

is usually caused by a locale issue. See issue 1420

You quickly check if this is the problem by running:

Code:
LC_ALL=C steam

If this is your problem, set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in /etc/default/locale

Thanks, that solved my problem. I was missing the s3tc USE flag.

edit: Actually, it solved the problem partially. Now I get a segmentation fault on tf2 after the initial loading screen, the menu just get rendered and instantly the window closes. I'm currently emerging gdb to try to debug that.

That's possibly a mesa issue, Spidey. I think the fix is only in git at the moment so you'll need a version from an overlay.

Here's the bug report: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71543

What can be the reason that Half Life shows only a black screen with the nvidia-drivers? I can hear the sound of the menu when moving the mouse, so the game has loaded. Other games like Quake, Unreal Tournament, Quake Wars, Portal, Oil Rush ect. are working fine...

*Edit* Fixed it by adding real screen resolution to the hl.cfg.

Sirserega,

Sure! On the page you link to, we have at least 2 different methods listed Ultimately they're the same when it comes to actually installing Steam, for we can only manage the dependencies. Steam (unfortunately, maybe) has to handle the installation all by itself.

I would recommend the manual installation (as it is close to how I set my installations up, and as such, the only method I've really tried). Optionally create a set for the dependencies as is described in the article.

I can not recommend the ebuild option, as I have not used it.

When you state “but it didnt install steam”, please also add what exactly you did while trying, so we can better help you. ^^

Hope this is helpful to someone, because it took me awhile to figure out. If you're trying to install steam on an ~amd64 box you'll want to get glibc-2.19 or possibly downgrade to stable as per this bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=488918

Basically glibc-2.18-r1 has a known defect, so you either need to patch it or use another version. I personally couldn't get the patch to work, but maybe I'm just dumb :D

To get glibc-2.19 run emerge --sync (of course) and add the following to /etc/portage/package.keywords:

=sys-libs/glibc-2.19 **

then emerge glibc or update your system...

BTW: you can tell you've got this issue if steam seg faults on boot and dmesg indicates the crash occurred in libc-2.18.so..

I get the segfault on startup with glibc-2.19

[5225513.121565] steam[7993]: segfault at 0 ip 00000000f7154051 sp 00000000ffb1fd9c error 4 in libc-2.19.so[f70d8000+1a0000]

Do i need to patch it or something?

Same here, segfault in glibc on ~amd64, crashing the X server.
Man, I just bought Civ 5 and now I can't play it on Linux, don't want to play it on Windows.

Anyone has any tips what may help?

Man, I just bought Civ 5 and now I can't play it on Linux, don't want to play it on Windows.

Anyone has any tips what may help?

I think you have a different issue, for me the X server crashes (effectively logging me out) immediately when I try to start Steam or do a fresh install of it. I don't even get to my library or the shop.

If you get a black screen and hear the intro music after launching Civilization V, try changing the value of FSResID in ~/.local/share/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini. In my case the default value was 0 but I had to set it to 7 to get the game to work.

It seems the required value for FSResID might be system dependent as other users have reported setting different values even though they have the same screen resolution (1920x1080) as me.

The game runs surprisingly well on my Intel i5-3570K CPU with HD 4000 GPU.

Thank you! Setting FSResID to 7 worked for me as well. 1600x900 X1 carbon 3337U HD 4000 GPU. I have wanted this game so bad on my hardened Gentoo laptop. I can't thank you enough for this tip. It runs super smooth as well. Thank you again.

Is anyone else finding that the client crashes when you try to opt into the beta.

Otherwise the client runs just fine. But if I go to settings and select the beta update then the client needs to restart, and I'm never able to start it again. It just crashes before it can even start.

I have to reinstall the entire steam client before it will run again.

I wonder if it has to do with the installation method, because I was in the beta for a while when I had steam installed through the portage overlay.
About a week ago I reinstalled steam and decided to do the manual installation instead. So I don't know if it's just something on their end that isn't working right for me, or if it's due to the manual installation method.

Nope, I just tried the steam overlay installation too (steam-launcher package) and it also has the same problem.
It just crashes with a segmentation fault
Code:

/home/stss/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 730: 14135 Segmentation fault      $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$STEAMEXEPATH" "$@"

not a very helpful error, but if I run steam with DEBUGGER=gdb steam it gives the following
Code:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 0xeea07b40 (LWP 13588)]

I don't know what else to look for, seems to be something wrong with dbus. But although steam is loading those libraries from the steam-runtime I also have libdbus-1.so.3 in both lib32 and lib64

I can't get it working even after starting dbus.

https://bpaste.net/raw/c23e3838b652

This seems to be about this issue, but as some people solved it by starting dbus, it was marked as solved:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3501

How are you starting dbus? I'm using /etc/init.d/dbus (as well as trying to mix that with starting steam with dbus-launch). In both cases, it fails.

Which arch are you in?

I can't start Civ5 either, no black screen, no intro, nothing, console doesn't say anything about it as well.

I made it to work, problem was in default USE flags for mesa, had to disable few flags and add some .
Borderlands 2 wasn't working as well and in Euro Truck simulator 2 headlights were not working :)
Anyway, all is good now.

The only game with a problem now is Stealth Bastard Deluxe, on gentoo steam wiki there's a guide for that game and how to fix it, but that didn't help, still having segfault error and game doesn't start.

Apparently the problem that I've been hitting is https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3415, and not the one I linked previously. For some reason, storing the password now makes steam crash on startup on my system.
