Hello, I have a question for programmers.
I'm developing a little project for the university. I decided to build on top of PostgreSQL and PostGIS an application to track the position of wild animals and doing some cool stuff with these info.
Did someone of you worked on that before? And can you give me some hints of any kind?
I want to read the position of a GPS signal in real time, I read something about GPX protocol but it seems to me that this kind of format is only used in log files, and I want real time data. Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance |

you could use some proprietary gps-receiver that shares its data eg via bluetooth or you could try gpsd http://www.catb.org/gpsd/
(i guess the problem will be getting the real-time data from the receiver on your wild animal to your application someplace else in real-time.)
GOOD LUCK! _________________ DUMM KLICKT GUT. |

Well you need hardware to receive a GPS signal, and how the data is reported by the hardware is mostly vendor specific. The closest to a standard protocol is NMEA83 over some kind of serial line, but it's far from perfect and may not even be available on your hardware. |
