Hi,

I've been using ssh -X <host> to get UI access to a remote linux box. It's painfully slow compared to Remote Desktop (RDP).

I'd like to know what others are using. Is there a way to get regular xorg to speed up to be as responsive as RDP? What else is there?

Here are my requirements:

  1. Fast.
  2. Multi-user, multi-connection (each user gets their own desktop, not simply sharing console like VNC)
  3. Standard cross-platform client (RDP, X server if it's fast, etc)
  4. Stable
  5. Starts as a service.
  6. Encrypted or can be piped through something that encrypts it.

I'm looking through xrdp docs now, trying to figure out whether it satisfies my requirements, but I'd like to hear from people who have tried several and have a favorite.

Thanks.

1clue,

You can run as many VNC server sessions as you want, so its multi user friendly.
As its not a screen scraper, its not terribly fast. The CPU does all the drawing in main memory.

Running over ssh imposes a latency overhead for the encryption - its likely thats the source of the slowdown.
It may be worth trying VPN rather than ssh - its lower latency.

NeddySeagoon,

The VPN is going to have to wait until some other things come online. Oddly enough that sort of depends on the old fashioned gentoo page getting updated. It's a long story.

I'll give VNC another look, but from what I remember it's just copying the local screen, which I don't want. I want any user to be able to log in, get THEIR windowing environment and their security, and continue on.

I'll try X without ssh, it's been a bit but if ssh is the cause of the slowdown then maybe I can wait until the VPN.

I was hoping that something like xrdp would be viable. I still haven't gotten to the bottom of that one but will do so sometime soon.

Thanks.

1clue,

The VNC I use, by default starts the first server on port 5901, the next one or 5902 and so on ...
I've never been able to get it to work as a screen scraper on Linux.

The old fashioned gentoo page was updated this evening.
I also have a AMD Phenom /no-multilib stage1, which I'm trying to rebuild as -mtune=generic.
Its not tested and the -mtune=generic attempt won't build python with USE=readline.
It also has circular deps with emerge -e @system

Not used RDP in a long time, but x2go is very comfortable to use and has the added benefit that you can suspend a session and resume elsewhere. It also supports client file and print sharing.

Another option to look at is xpra which appears to be actively developed, I have tried it but not recently

@NeddySeagoon,

I'm looking at an office application. If it had a single port listening, that transferred to a high-numbered port, then VNC would be fine. I can't have everyone hunt for an open port, not everyone is UN*X-savvy.

Extremely glad to hear about the update to your page. I'm heading out of town for a few days but will definitely dive in when I get back.

@baaann,

I really like the idea of suspend/resume elsewhere. I like the suspended session for RDP, and I love the multi-session aspect of screen. I'll definitely look at these two projects to see where they stand.

Thanks.

compress traffic over ssh.
`ssh -X -C <login@server>` does surprisingly good job.
