When I rebooted my system today fail2ban failed to start. I didn't change any config file.
I can't find out what is wrong because there is almost no log info to go on.

Here is the only loginfo I have:

also fail?

if so, try disabling all the jails, back off the settings, then gradually bring in more and more jails until it stops working. can you pastebin your jail file?

I used a new install and new config. After that it did start. But it fails when I enable ssh-iptables.

I think I solved the problem.
The file '/var/log/sshd.log' does not excist. I changed this line to '/var/log/auth.log'.
I'm going to do some more checks tomorrow. (It is getting late in the Netherlands ;-) ).

If everything works again then I'm going to add [solved] to the subject.

no problem, ill put it on my 2 do list to wiki up more of fail2ban here. i suggest making your services to be jailed in the format of /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/sshd.conf and splitting them up instead of having everything all in 1 file. that way sshd can be renamed to sshd.conf.backup, restart fail2ban and everything but sshd would be jailed and protected again.

I began with filling jail.d and have turned all off in jail.conf.

Here the results:
- sshd-iptables is working
- when reloading I get the warning: "WARNING 'ignoreregex' not defined in 'Definition'. Using default one: ''"

So don't know how to fix that warning.

i only have 1 jail sshd via syslog-ng & ufw for when i populated jails.d example on fail2ban wiki found here... https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Fail2ban#jail.d

again same plan, back off your settings till it works perfectly then introduce configs and restart introduce more restart until you find the jail throwing problems.....

they say a malformed jail is causing the error....

im trying to get it so there is only a single point of failure, and that is wrapped within the jail.d directory.... id probably name the tested and confirmed working jails to jail.conf.good until you complete populating the jail.d directory.

Now I only have sshd no warning is given anymore. I have /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/sshd.conf:

/var/log/fail2ban.log is where fail2ban logs to... /var/log/messages is what that particular jail is scanning for ssh messages to determine clowns failing to log in, needing banning.

I know it logs there because when I do tail -f /var/log/auth.log and then login width ssh I see a log about it.

I'm not sure why it is being logged there. I have syslog-ng and a hardened kernel and profile. I used http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/security/security-handbook.xml?part=1&chap=3#doc_chap4 for splitting the logs up.

There are two lines that makes it go there I guess:
