After googling for a day I couldn't really figure out, why I cannot login through any graphical login manager :(

I can login through console and ssh without any problems, just kdm/xdm keep telling me "login failed".
I guess the important bit is from /var/log/messages
Code:
kdm: :0[6815]: pam_unix(kde:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost=  user=JumpinS

I can enter KDE using startx from console after killing kdm as root.
Also tried to find some essential missing group membership that might be required to log in graphically, but nothing obvious to me.
Also tried to re-emerged pam.

Thanks in advance for any help

hi

uid=0 means you are trying to login as root. this is probably not allowed by your login manager. if that is not the case, have you added your user to the group video?

The user is neither root nor member of that group.

Although root access is disallowed on kdm, it's also disallowed on sshd. However I can login with that user through ssh...

Why does kdm claim he's root ?

Primary Group is users
Secondary Groups:

  • wheel
  • video
  • audio
  • cdrom
  • dialout
  • cdrw
  • usb
  • plugdev

Is there any other information I can supply to help you with troubleshooting? Although I've been using gentoo for a while, I'm still quite noobish

edit:
Here's the log when I login on ssh first as root (which is disabled) and then as the normal User
Code:
sshd[6657]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=jumanji.mshome.net  user=root
sshd[6655]: error: PAM: Authentication failure for root from jumanji.mshome.net
sshd[6662]: Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for JumpinS from 192.168.0.1 port 4968 ssh2
sshd[6666]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for user JumpinS by (uid=0)

JumpinS UserID is 1000

Usernames with capital letters in it tend to make problems. Add another user and try again.

I finally found the problem
xdm/kdm will refuse any login attempts if the user has a weak password.

As I was just testing user login I created a simple user with a weak password based on a dictionary entry.
I couldn't login with that one

Then I created another user (to test the lowercase theory) with a different weak password, but not from a dict.
Login worked

However if I changed the users password as root to be the same as the first one, login was refused again.

Many thanks for your help folks :)

Thank you JumpinS, thank you Gentoo forum.

And I hope more people post the solutions they find, for others. :D I'll make sure this post gets noticed on a couple of other forums and threads
