Hello,

I've been searching for a while to find a solution to this problem and haven't managed to have any luck thus far. The problem is something to do with KMS not being compiled into the kernel, and I can't figure out why. I've followed this wiki and applied the settings to the best of my ability, yet when I compile the kernel and boot from it, I am still receiving the following message from Xorg:

Code:

(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported

I've looked at other threads here concerning the same issue but for whatever reason they did not help fix the issue. I'm a newbie to this, so it's very likely that I overlooked something or did something I shouldn't have. If someone could help me out I'd appreciate it.

Here is /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

** Update **

Okay, so I managed to get KMS support compiled in properly (apparently it wasn't before), but now it's saying "No screens found" when I try to use startx. When I try doing "X -configure" it says "Missing output drivers".

I've been reading all sorts of information the last 2 days since I began with Gentoo, and I'm thoroughly confused. The regular install went smoothly and took barely no time at all - it's these video card drivers that have sucked up all my time and given me the most frustration. I guess my questions at this point are:

- Are the open-source drivers (and KMS stuff) compatible with Xorg anymore?
- Why on earth does the proprietary driver not work with newer cards, despite the AMD site saying it does
- Is XFree86 a better way to go than Xorg?

I have the proper VIDEO_CARD setting in make.conf, and from what I understand, that is what is needed to "pull in" the radeon driver from xorg-drivers. However, when I emerge the Xorg stuff I get the KMS error again. I do not understand what the fuck is happening and it is driving me crazy.

I've also made sure that I had the proper stuff compiled in from linux-firmware (ie. /lib/firmware/radeon/BONAIRE_*).

If you need any more info, let me know. Thank you.

Alright, so here's where I stand. I've decided to use the proprietary drivers instead (might want to do a bit of gaming at some point). I've completely removed anything and everything Xorg, and have disabled framebuffer support in the kernel, as well as removing the firmware "blobs" or whatever. I've recompiled the kernel and I am ready to install the ati-drivers. Is there anything I should do before I attempt this? I really would rather not screw things up again.

Anyone? It seems like a really simple thing that I'm overlooking.

Without any framebuffer activated in the kernel, you will only have the kernel text mode. It should be good for the Ati proprietary drivers. Be sure after you emerge them, that the fglrx kernel module it loaded properly and you have the /etc/X11/xorg.conf that will use the Xorg fglrx module. The aticonfig command can generate one.

About the free Radeon kernel and Xorg modules, you can add the appropriate firmware files in the kernel image, but the path to them who work for me is like this
Code:
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware/"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/BONAIRE_ce.bin radeon/BONAIRE_mc.bin radeon/BONAIRE_me.bin radeon/BONAIRE_mec.bin radeon/BONAIRE_pfp.bin radeon/BONAIRE_rlc.bin radeon/BONAIRE_sdma.bin radeon/BONAIRE_smc.bin radeon/BONAIRE_uvd.bin"
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y

You can use an initramfs instead who include the firmware files that will be loaded by the kernel at early boot time. Dracut can make one for you.

Note that the Ati proprietary drivers do not work for me if I boot Gentoo and Debian in EFI mode. I use the Radeon kernel and Xorg modules anyway. They go and work well together.

Thanks for the reply.

I am definitely going to go the proprietary route. I set up make.conf so that VIDEO_CARDS is set to "fglrx" and I've merge'd ati-drivers and xorg-server, yet when I try to X -configure or aticonfig it says "No supported adapters detected". The command "fglrxinfo" also says "unable to open display (null)" which sounds a lot like the errors from X -configure ("No devices to configure") and startx ("no screens found").

Would creating a xorg.conf file manually work? If not, what other options are there?

Here are Xorg.conf, make.conf and lspci output:

jreid,

X -configure has been broken for many years.

You need a stub xorg.conf that tells Xorg to use the fglrx driver.
Its been a while since I had an ATI card but the binary blob used to be provided with a utility ta make an xorg.conf for you.

The utility that is supposed to make the xorg.conf file is 'aticonfig', but it won't because it says there are no supported adapters, however when I used a stub like you said:

Code:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "ATI Binary Blob"
        Driver "fglrx"
EndSection

.. startx took me to a black screen and then exited normally. I installed twm to test it out but it still gives the "unable to open display" error. I'm pretty sure I need to generate the rest of the xorg.conf somehow. I think I'm getting closer though. Any ideas?

** EDIT **

For some unknown reason, the second time I ran startx (literally ran no other commands since the first time) twm started up and I now have a visual display. I need to work in the mouse and keyboard into the xorg.conf but I think it's going to be easy sailing from here.

Thank you both for the help. I am going to leave this as unsolved for the time being while I finish up, incase something goes horribly wrong and I need to ask another question.

Alright, I haven't been able to get the mouse or keyboard working yet. Is this even a worthwhile endeavor, given what aticonfig reports ("no supported adapters")? I think if it wasn't going to work at all, then TWM wouldn't work, so obviously it's doing something right in regards to the fglrx driver. The problem is that without X -configure or aticonfig I am unable to come up with a xorg.conf that allows input. Does anyone know a way to get the needed information so that I can fine-tune the file? Nothing I've seen online works so far.

Where is writen the stub you use? Is it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or as a .conf file name in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ ? It should be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ . That way, Xorg will use the fglrx driver and it's default configuration for all the rest, what should be good. The aticonfig command do not do really more than your stub anyway when it generate an xorg.conf file.

You may need to emerge some input Xorg drivers like xf86-input-evdev, xf86-input-mouse, xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-synaptics. So you can have in /etc/portage/make.conf
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse synaptics"

Hell yeah. Up and running perfectly now with KDE4! I was missing the evdev drivers. Thanks a ton!
