However, Google will keep the majority of Motorola's lucrative patents, which include one for Android software.

In a statement, Google said the smartphone market was "super competitive" and that Motorola would "be better served by Lenovo".

I didn't think the patents worked out all that well for them.

Since they haven't seemed to figure out what to do with that non-ad driven business, I'm not surprised they sold it. A shame Motorola is now Chinese.

HONG KONG--Google Inc. (GOOG) bought a 5.94% stake in Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK) on Jan. 30 for $750 million, according to a Hong Kong stock-exchange filing.

It bought 618.3 million Lenovo shares at HK$1.213 each, according to the filing made earlier this week.

The purchase was made on the same day the Chinese personal-computer maker announced a $2.91 billion deal to buy Google's Motorola Mobility handset unit for cash and stock.

Lenovo is paying $660 million in cash and buying up to 618.3 million shares.

The amount and value of the shares Google bought are the same as those disclosed in the Motorola transaction.

Lenovo did wonders for the ThinkPad. Let's see what happens.

Motorola did all the early work on mobiles so the patents were bought in defence. It's the mutually assured destruction example. As you can see there have been no new court cases because the lawyers have been working in the background and as soon as one company sues over 1 patent the other will sue over 5 and then the original will add 10 to the infringement and then the other will add 20.

The case(s) would be never-ending and they know that

Unless I'm mistaken, they tried using patents shortly after the purchase and lost. I don't recall seeing any success stories.

Do you have one with the new keyboard and TrackPoint? I believe the new TrackPoint eliminates the 3 physical buttons and implements a touchpad. I've never used a touchpad that worked well.
