Posted: Sun Feb 02, 2014 6:39 pm Post subject: Consolekit cannot open session.... |
|
|
When logging in to KDM I get the following:
"Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Unable to get information about the calling process"
This started spontaneously. Worked just fine on the first login of the day, and after a reboot, there it was.
"ck-list-sessions" returns nothing (blank).
dbus and consolekit are both in the default run level.
I've re emerged dbus, consolekit, polkit with no change. I even ran "emerge -ev @world" as a just in case.
Disabled autostart of xdm and tried 'startx' from console with no joy.
The relevant part of messages looks like this:

The difference between working and not working is that I no longer see any entries in messages from dbus about activating the org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit service.

Did you get any warnings about kernel settings while building consolekit ? |

None at all. I've made sure that all appropriate kernel configs are set. What's curious is that this installation was working just fine before the reboot. No updates or other changes were made immediately before. The kernel has been in use for almost a week before this started. _________________ There are only 2 types of naval vessels.......Submarines and targets |

Same here, Restart with old kernel doesn't change anything. I continue my investigation.
I have many machine with Gentoo KDE, and the only with this bug is the x86 one. Other are amd64 and work fine.

I had a similar problem. My ConsoleKit and emerge.log in /var/log indicated that dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common, dev-libs/glib, and dev-libs/gobject-introspection packages were updated shortly before the problem appeared. All were included as test packages in /etc/portage/package.keywords. The problem disappeared after I deleted them from that file and reemerged them, then reemerged sys-apps/dbus. |

Tried that..... No change. The curious thing is that all of my amd64 systems work just fine. All systems are at the same revision level on all packages and kernel versions. Only the x86 installation has the problem. _________________ There are only 2 types of naval vessels.......Submarines and targets |

I solved the Pulseaudio problem by making sure that my user was a member of the audio group.
It's beginning to look like a change was made that affected the x86 side of the house. I'll bet that none of the devs run such systems so such was never tested. _________________ There are only 2 types of naval vessels.......Submarines and targets |

Adding the user to the audio group shouldn't be needed. It's another symptom of consolekit being broken somehow. |

The behavior is puzzling. I did some more experimenting on my amd64 machine (which was the one used above). Everything works fine if I use the test versions of the introspection packages and the stable version of the glib package. If I use the test version of the glib package, the problem reappears. I also have an X86 machine (I5 core). It works fine with test versions for all the packages including glib.
Incidentally, when the ConsoleKit problem is present, I also lose all audio. |

What do you mean by test version of packages? Unstable packages as in ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" (or "~amd64" for you amd64 machine)? |

So I confirm that dev-libs/glib-2.38 is the culprit. If I mask it and reinstall dev-libs/glib-2.36 then everything is back to normal. What I don't understand is that glib-2.38 should be masked. If you check on packages.gentoo.org, it shows up as hard masked. I think what happenned is that somehow it got unmasked for the x86 profile (and not for amd64), but I can't figure out why. |

Interesting. Porthole shows dev-libs/glib-2.38.2 available for all ~arch's, not hard masked at all. All my systems run ~arch and so have 2.38.2. Back leveling to 2.36.4-r1 had no effect here. _________________ There are only 2 types of naval vessels.......Submarines and targets |

I meant that a version is a test version if it listed in /etc/portage/package.keywords as "dev-libs/glib ~amd64" and a stable version if it is there as "# dev-libs/glib ~amd64", i.e., commented out.
The gentoo architecture nomenclature can be confusing, e.g., "...AMD64 is a generic reference to 64-bit chips, whether AMD or Intel" (from https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AMD64/FAQ). x86 suggests a 32-bit architecture that is Intel compatible. |

Im also having this problem, also on x86.
Looking around on the net, i found out that consolekit is not maintained anymore, so is there a chance that this bug get fixed at all?
Is there a easy way to get rid of consolekit and have the same functionality (without switching to systemd)?
Especialy i need the feature to mount usb-devices in kde the way it works with consolekit. |

It is maintained (at Gentoo) and both Gentoo and Debian developers are keeping it working at upstream git. The fact that original upstream moved on to systemd (logind) and that there isn't much commits in git just means the software is mature.
I'm using all the latest packages here without issues, so other than the apparent misconfiguration issues this thread is referencing, I'm not aware of any actual bugs that'd prevent it from working at this time.
Entirely different story if KDE dropped ConsoleKit support like GNOME 3.8+ did of course, that'd mean the *ConsoleKit backend in KDE is not maintained* not that *ConsoleKit is not maintained*
Using Xfce myself and all is good |

@ssuominen, are you running KDE on ~x86? The problem only seems to affect that arch, and backleveling doesn't fix it. All of my ~amd64 machines are running just fine. There is most definitely a problem, and it cropped up only a week or so ago. I can assure you that there are no misconfigurations on my machines. _________________ There are only 2 types of naval vessels.......Submarines and targets |

I can state this kind of trouble I'm also affected by. Also only on my ~x86 Netbook, not on my ~amd64 system. I update these systems nearly on a daily basis and this fault starts around the weekend of the 01. Frebruary.
I tried to downgrade lots of packages described in this thread, but it doesn't work for me.
Additionally to the misbehavior described in this thread, I have the following trouble, but I'm not fully sure it has a connection, cause before I've done the update which broke my system, I've done some use-flag changes to get rid of some networkmanager connection weakness.
So I removed the dhcpcd package and flags, added the dhclient flag and updated my system in a way like this #emerge -DuvaN @world.
Since this time I fiddle around with the "Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Unable to get information about the calling process" fault.
Additional I can't configure the networkmanager connections via GUI any longer.
The plasma-nm Symbol in the menue bar shows only the LAN socket since this time, but the WLAN connection works fine further longer. No SSID's of the surrounding WLAN stations are could be shown now.
Adding new connections via GUI doesn't help. No old or new connections are not shown within the connection manager.
So I presume all of this should have to do with ConsoleKit session error.
Lastly any help is very appreciated. _________________ If you want to see a Distro done right, compile it yourself! |

Switching to systemd resolve my problems.
I had planned to test systemd, now it's done. |

letchideslandes,
in my opinion that is not the right way to find the root cause and also not a good way for me.
If this would be the right and only way to sort out this kind of error, a crazy idea came to my mind.
"Possibly a worse plan of LP who is/was involved into the development of both Packages (consolekit and systemd)".
No wonder that some guys here asked around, how to get rid of all that LP software packages from their system.
Regards, Andy. _________________ If you want to see a Distro done right, compile it yourself! |

I'm using FVWM (%&$!! YEAH OLDSKOOL), with glib-2.38.2 and most recent ConsoleKit. I log in using kdm, and I have exactly these problems. I'm on ~amd64. Does remerging glib fix this issue, or is there some other config that needs to be changed?
Cheers,
EE |

Try using "dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1", which is, I think, the latest stable version of glib. It works for me. |

I was given to understand that downgrading glib is nontrivial. Is that not the case?
Cheers,
EE
PS- it is, indeed, nontrivial: half a dozen packages depend on the 2.38.* series of glib; what are the issues to consider when contemplating moving over to systemd? Or should I just suck it up and do without audio until whatever is wrong with this glib and KDE gets resolved?
PPS- ZOMG you guys, the latest update for KDE (I synced it this afternoon) fixes the issue. drop to a shell, restart consolekit (not sure if needed?), re-start kdm, and the issue seems resolved. Huzzah! |

Fuck,
this Info came one day too late for me, after one week of hassle.
Cause downgrading of glib is non trivial, I decided to went back to a backup of the version before, but without backing up this none functional version.
Now I have to recompile my whole world and libreoffice again, on my Atom Netbook.
ExecutorElassus,
could you please paste the last updated packages of your emerge.log, which seems to solve this problem for you.
I'm interested in the root cause package, which is further longer not really clear to me. (really dev-libs/glib ?)
Does anyone have seen a bug-report stating this in the meantime.
Best regards, Andy. _________________ If you want to see a Distro done right, compile it yourself! |
