There's no actual need for the increase. It's just because they can.

Vote: Would You Pay More for Amazon Prime?

No, I wouldn't pay more. And neither would 47% of those polled.

As a side note, this is related to why I had avoided buying any streaming hardware for so long. When the services are no longer viable, the device is a paperweight. Oh well. Last time I make that mistake.

It's a bargain for me as is, because shipping to Hawaii is expensive.

Yeah, considering the savings in your shipping costs it is a bargain.

I'm surprised they don't have a different rate for Hawaii.

Whether or not it is a "bargain" depends heavily on shipping costs. I might "break even," with Instant Video thrown in as a nice-to-have-but-wouldn't-pay-for bonus. The 2nd day service for "free" is certainly nice, but it benefits Amazon more than it does me. Other than Prime, I've never ordered anything with express shipping service.

no.

prime is a waste of money. virtually everything that's covered by prime has free 5-8 day shipping, but prime's 2-day shipping isn't reliable. the 5-8 day often arrives faster than the 2-day, or even the overnight.

I've had reliable service with Prime. I've had two occasions when it wasn't on time. One was during the holidays, but the problem was bad weather in Texas which caused a back up they couldn't catch up on the backlog in time (UPS). Amazon should have known of the problem and rerouted sourcing of orders (maybe their system doesn't allow for that). The other time I don't recall the exact details. I believe I ordered late in the week, believing it should have arrived on a Friday and received it on a Monday instead.

On the plus side, I received Saturday delivery once. That was early on, and I thought that might have been normal, but it hasn't happened since.

If shipping costs to your location is low, then it makes no sense to have Prime.

2 day shipping vs. 5-8 day shipping. And that's why I'm not willing to pay $20-$40 more.

Makes no sense for me if they don't artificially slow down the ordinary delivery.
Usually I get stuff within 2 days WITHOUT ordering via prime. I ordered something last Wednesday, it arrived on Friday but was actually due Saturday. Only around Christmas one order took longer than I expected but was still punctual. Just took longer than usual until I received the mail that it was shipped, but then it arrived the day they said it would.

Oh yeah? One time a Kindle arrived, and then I ordered it!

Oh well. I guess I'll no longer be using Amazon when that happens.

I just started my free 30 day tryout yesterday. I wonder if I'm going to be charged the old rate or the new one.

My main reason for getting it is the tv / movie streams. It's part of my plan to 'cut the cord' and get rid of satellite tv.

I've got FreeSat and the tv is connected to the computer. There's no need to get rid of the satellite!

Mine's good for quite a while, so I'll keep it until shortly before it renews.

It's OK, but I personally don't think the service is yet worth the price.

My problem is party with all streaming services. When you get Cable or Satellite, you mostly get the same options. But with streaming services, there's quite a bit that each doesn't have. The "channel" interface is horrible, and compounded when you add multiple providers. The Roku isn't bad, but it's really a poor interface compared with the "channel guides" which come with cable & satellite.

I've also found that they often don't have stuff I'd prefer to watch, so I end up settling for stuff I probably wouldn't watch if what I wanted was available :D
