Gentoo Linux Security Advisory
Title: Git: Privilege escalation (GLSA 201401-06)
Severity: high
Exploitable: local
Date: January 10, 2014
Bug(s): #335891
ID: 201401-06
Synopsis
A stack-based buffer overflow in Git might allow a local attacker
to gain escalated privileges.
Background
Git is a free and open source distributed version control system
designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with
speed and efficiency.
Affected Packages
Package: dev-vcs/git
Vulnerable: < 1.7.2.2
Unaffected: >= 1.7.2.2
Architectures: All supported architectures
Description
Git contains a stack-based buffer overflow in the is_git_directory
function in setup.c.
Impact
A local attacker could gain escalated privileges via a specially crafted
git repository.
Workaround
There is no known workaround at this time.
Resolution
All Git users should upgrade to the latest version: Code: | # emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=dev-vcs/git-1.7.2.2"
| NOTE: This is a legacy GLSA. Updates for all affected architectures are
available since September 11, 2010. It is likely that your system is
already no longer affected by this issue.
