Quote:
Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula 1 world champion, is in a critical condition after a skiing accident, says the French hospital at which he is being treated.

The 44-year-old German "was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival" the hospital in the south-east city of Grenoble said in a statement.

Schumacher's management confirmed his critical condition, reports said.

He was skiing off-piste with his son in the Alps when the accident occurred.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head against a rock, Meribel resort director Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte said earlier.

Early reports had said his condition was not life-threatening.

Mr Gernignon-Lecomte said Schumacher was conscious when he was attended to by two ski patrollers who requested helicopter evacuation to the nearby valley town of Moutiers.

He was subsequently moved to the bigger facility at Grenoble.

I must be the only Schumacher fan here. When I was really in to F1, it was during his reign as the absolute master of the race. He always found that extra second each lap which eluded the lesser drivers.

So, here's hoping he recovers completely.

It warm this year but there were a couple of days of cold, this makes the perfect conditions for avalanches. There were already 5 deaths in Italy alone, among off-piste skiers, in this skiing season (begun in November 2013). It is also dangerous because there is a tiny layer of fresh snow over a tiny liyer of ice over snow, skiing over that is going to be unpredictable and dangerous. Off-piste skiing is really a bad idea this year.

Oh well an avalanche caused by off-piste skiiers killed a guy and wounded 5 that were skiing over a regular slope.

Off-piste skiing with avalanche-alert system at 5 is just madness, and the guys that killed a skier on a regular slope murderer :-)

Oh, certainly. It'd be a rather boring end like that.

Considering that the medical report talks about "extensive brain damage" I don't know what could be better ....

... well for starters, I'd think him *not* dying would be good.

but i was indeed pissed off that even our government spokesman took his time to point out how saddened the politards are to hear of this. like they wouldn't have better shit to grieve about.

There will be so much good joke material if he does die though, I can see "Nuremberg RALLY" being prominent.

Sorry, I'm not much of a fan of the guy. Superb driver, one of the greatest the world has ever seen, he just never put as much effort into being a good human being. But yeah, I hope he doesn't die, not for around 40 years anyway
