Nearing the end of my installation, I have emerged nvidia-drivers, written the appropriate entry in /etc/portage/make.conf and did "modprobe nvidia". I have also emerged fluxbox. When I do "startx" I get error messages. Here is a printout of my /var/log/Xorg. Sorry it's pretty long.

Is there a conflict with "nouveau" possibily? Thanks in advance for any help.

If using nouveau you must enable KMS in kernel and it will work without xorg.conf.
If using proprietary drivers you must have xorg.conf to load the driver, containing following:
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
EndSection

Thanks. It's been year since I've used gentoo so I'm feeling a bit of a newb - there seems to be no xorg.conf (where it should be?). There's one in /usr/share/portage/config/sets/xorg.conf. Is that right? I thought it was supposed to be in /etc/X11.

By default, there indeed is no such a file, and one must create it if they happen to need it (not usually needed with nouveau for example, as was mentioned).

The location you're thinking of is correct (/etc/X11/xorg.conf; see also man xorg.conf).

Balcome weck!

Why not google you errors before commiting an ...uh..error?
You have multitudes of (EE) in the logs saying KMS is at fault.
What is KMS?
