Has anyone else seen this error?

A good start could be this bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=644708 with the same compile error that was traced to binutils but yours is on a newer version.

Thanks, that did help. The missing functions are defined in libncurses. I tried all kinds of things, from hacking my CFLAGS to try and force /lib64/libncurses.so.5 to be linked. That led nowhere. Finally I went looking through the ebuild files with plans to make my own to try out different ways of passing the necessary library to the linker. That's when I found that tcsh-6.18.01-r2.ebuild had this comment:

Code:

   # fix dependency on ncurses[tinfo], #45948 /4
   sed \
      -e "s:\(ncurses\):\1 tinfo:g" \
      -i configure.in || die

Well this looked promising. I unmasked this package, emerged it, and presto, success:

Code:

bash$ emerge --autounmask-write -a =tcsh-6.18.01-r2
bash$ dispatch-conf
bash$ emerge -a =tcsh-6.18.01-r2
bash$ success
-bash: success: command not found

Cool, perhaps you could check if the sed line would solve the problem in the stable branch and submit a bug.
