I want to do this too. I HATE GNOME 3. In my opinion they completely ruined it. I'm thinking Gentoo needs MATE. |

You can install MATE from the Mate overlay.
Instead of masking Gnome-3, I installed MATE instead. Takes some time but worth it in the end. I only have one more machine to update to MATE. Have had it on my main workstation for a couple of months now and it work well for me. |

OldTango, please post a HOW-TO on migrating to Mate. I'm in the process of doing this on one box, but I'm not done exorcizing Gnome3 yet.
On a second box, I'm keeping Gnome2. I had to put a lot of blocks in. Right now, it seems to be updating 115 files (haven't updated this box for a while). I'll post a post-mortem tomorrow night. The build will probably take until quite late and I have to get up early for work tomorrow.
I've got quite a big mask list.
I want to keep gdm if possible for compatibility with Xming. Have you any clues as to an ebuild for gdm-old. Also, shouldn't nautilus be replaced by caja? |

Installing Mate did not work as well. I had previously installed mate from the overlay. Again, I had to change from a gnome profile to a simple desktop profile. I unmerged gnome and all components. Apparently mate wanted some back so I had to do the following additions to /etc/portage/package.mask
# no gnome 3 !!!
>gnome-base/gdm-2.99
>gnome-base/nautilus-2.99
>gnome-base/gnome-settings-daemon-2.99
>gnome-base/gnome-control-center-2.99
>gnome-base/gnome-common-2.99
gnome-extra/sushi
gnome-base/gnome-on-line-accounts
gnome-base/gnome-common
>dev-python/pygobject-3.2.2-r1
>gnome-extra/sensors-applet-2.99
>gnome-base/gvfs-1.12.3-r1
However, when I try to log on, I get the gdm greeter. Then when I enter my user name and password, the screen blanks and presents the greeter again.
Perhaps I have to symlink mate-session to gnome-session? |

This wasn't a duplicate, but it was split off from another thread to add some clarity to user questions regarding masking of Gnome 3.8.
New MATE thread: Installing Mate from the MATE overlay
Original thread began with Masking Gnome 3 (this may end up merged with another thread). _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
