I am able to update ebuilds from mate overlay by using layman -S. But the updated ebuilds with ~amd64 arch doesn't show up while I emerge world like this.
Code: | gentoo ~ # emerge -avuDN --with-bdeps y --keep-going world
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 kB
Nothing to merge; quitting.
gentoo ~ #
|
The package I wanted to install was mate-settings-daemon which is of the version 1.7.0 ebuild , whereas the installed version is mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.6.1.
How do I make or force the packages with KEYWORDS ~amd64 get it updated and installed in mate overlay? _________________ LENOVO Y580 FHD Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz × 8 |660M GTX NVIDIA | 16GB SanDisk SSD

I see a mis-configuration that is not likely causing your problem, but could.
Code: | PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/var/lib/layman/mate" |
That is not the normal method of setting it to detect layman installed overlays.
Layman adds those entries in it's own /var/lib/layman/make.conf file.
You should have added a line like this to /etc/portage/make.conf Code: | source /var/lib/layman/make.conf |
Also to find out why emerge doesn't want to install the ebuild from the overlay, then ask it to specifically.
Code: | emerge some-mate-pkg::mate | that tells emerge you want the pkg from the mate overlay. If it is masked by something, it will tell you why.
NOTE: you add "::overlay-name" to the end of the pkg you want to install. If you are also specifying a slot, then ":slot:overlay-name" _________________ Brian

Thanks for the Answer.
I did what you said but It didn't change anything.
Still not able to update to newest packages from mate repos.
With all due respect why should I slot the packages when the update is available. How many packages to slot for the whole DE?
It would be tough to maintain all the slots for the whole DE.
Edit:
I guess its masked. But the ebuild has the unstable ~amd64 keyword for it. I am not sure if there is any other alternate way to mask.

If you Code: |
emerge -pv =mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.7.0
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U #] mate-base/mate-desktop-1.7.1::mate-overlay [1.6.1-r1::mate-overlay] USE="-debug -gtk3" 2,941 kB
[ebuild U #] mate-base/libmatekbd-1.7.1::mate-overlay [1.6.1::mate-overlay] USE="-gtk3 {-test}" 354 kB
[ebuild U #] mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.7.0::mate-overlay [1.6.1::mate-overlay] USE="libnotify policykit -debug -gtk3% -pulseaudio -smartcard" 764 kB
Total: 3 packages (3 upgrades), Size of downloads: 4,058 kB
The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.7.0::mate-overlay
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
# /var/lib/layman/mate/profiles/package.mask:
#Mask caja-dropbox for now. I have no idea how this works.
# Mask mate-system-tools for now, needs testing
#Mask new development release
=mate-base/libmatekbd-1.7.1
# required by mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.7.0::mate-overlay
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
# /var/lib/layman/mate/profiles/package.mask:
#Mask caja-dropbox for now. I have no idea how this works.
# Mask mate-system-tools for now, needs testing
#Mask new development release
=mate-base/mate-desktop-1.7.1
# required by =mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.7.0 (argument)
# /var/lib/layman/mate/profiles/package.mask:
#Mask caja-dropbox for now. I have no idea how this works.
# Mask mate-system-tools for now, needs testing
#Mask new development release
=mate-base/mate-settings-daemon-1.7.0
NOTE: The --autounmask-keep-masks option will prevent emerge
from creating package.unmask or ** keyword changes.

You'll get more information and discover their masked in /var/lib/layman/mate/profiles/package.mask |

Thank you for the answer. I didn't know this existed /var/lib/layman/mate/profiles/package.mask.
Edit:
For posterity purpose.
I am able to install packages from layman repos. The packages were development versions and masked by layman and I didn't know there was more than one place to mask the packages. _________________ LENOVO Y580 FHD Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz × 8 |660M GTX NVIDIA | 16GB SanDisk SSD |
