UPDATE(2013/11/24):

Recompiled everything with USE=xinerama and it works! The problem may lie on qtgui which did not compile with xinerama support. Thank everyone for your help!

------------------------
Hi! Recently I got a VGA external display and I tried to connect it to my Gentoo box running KDE. However, I can only set the monitor behaviour to "clone", or to make the two display act like one(which means if I maximize window, it stretches along two displays). However, on my Linuxmint LiveCD, everything worked perfectly: two monitors are separate and I can drag windows between them. I am trying to track down to kernel level, but I can't find why. The only difference I have is the Xorg.0.log.

Xorg.0.log from Gentoo(which fails):

As you can see the gentoo one lacks a lot of info about the monitors. Any ideas?

It seems that it is not X-related, but on some kind of more base-level thing. When I click "identify outputs", the IDs of both screens are shown on each monitor, so there must be something wrong to make them mixed together. Probably on kernel-level, so now I am trying to use debian-sources + config from the working Mint livecd. BTW, is there even anyone reading this post? Am I on the correct section?

ANY ideas? I tracked down everything I can, from KDE to X and udev and kernel, the only thing I can't understand is why the two monitors are read as one. Both systems uses auto configuration of X, both uses udev and KDE, I tested debian kernel, downgraded Xorg and xf86-video-intel, and it just can't get the right card info or the EDID info. I don't know why.

Having the same problem here with KDE 4.10.5 on nouveau. Interestingly, Fluxbox appears to work fine -- as in, maximize to screen rather than to desktop. That suggests it's a KDE-as-built-on-Gentoo thing.

Do you have another window manager to try? I'm interested to see if you get the same results I did.

Do you have another window manager to try? I'm interested to see if you get the same results I did.

I don't know how to get those work on other WM though. I will try

Confirmed --- Open box works, but KDE, even with a new user, fails. might be some (default?) configuration problem

Ok, seems to be a KDE-related problem. Now when I try to change display settings, the following appends to ~/.xsession-errors:
Code:

The problem may lie here. I need to compare with Mint

According to the error msg, I still guess there should be some correlation with EDID. Mint reads EDID while X starts, but Gentoo does not. WHY!!!!

Interesting. Lots of spam from the color management stuff, which is probably irrelevant. But the first line is suspicious:

Code:
This backend is only for XRandR 1.1, your version is:  1 . 4

Could be that simple -- an incompatibility between recent KDE build and xrandr 1.4? I'm using libXrandr-1.4.2 and randrproto-1.4.0-r1. The oldest proto in my portage tree is 1.3.2. The lib only has 1.4+.

This message does not show up in Mint. Its XRandR is a bit older, but still 1.3 sth. Not because of KWin since kde-openbox does not work, so might be plasma desktop. Or it can be the EDID problem since Gentoo does not read out the EDID of LVDS1 but mint does, and Gentoo reported different Graphics card.

This message comes from KScreen, not KDE display.

Further testing using Enlightenment showed the same problem. Now I suspect if it is a Xinerama related problem.
