Fred, are you sure you were right now talking about Slim? -If yes, what do you mean by Network, CPU and mostly by "different workspaces"?
I am may be missing the thing, but to me Slim is just Graphical login manager where I enter login and password and flip into xfce shell.
It's is visible on the screen max 15 sec. I can't even imagine what kind access to your CPU you do mean in your message. If not the natural one,
where CPU is responsible for what you can see and do with laptop.
Could you also specify exactly WHAT is not working and what ERROR message you are getting from slim.log or Xorg.log files? If it comes to it. _________________ Lefsha |

Yes I was confused. I was thinking of lightdm as a replacement for xfce4 (please don't ask me why). So I'll give lightdm another try, and see if I can't get it to start xfce4. When it booted up, it just booted into a bare lightdm system, and I was thinking it was all I was going to get.
Looking a bit more, it is not so clear how to get xfce4 started from lightdm. Do I need something in ~/.xinitrc? I just recently got rid of that file. Just having ~/.xsession containing: startxfce4 was not sufficient. Thanks,

I do not use xinitrc either so I assume lightdm will detect your available sessions automatically. The menu to select a session should be easy to spot unless it is hiding for some reason. Should load by default after the first login. |

In /etc/conf.d/xdm I have given myself three choices:
Quote: | #DISPLAYMANAGER="lightdm"
#DISPLAYMANAGER="slim"
DISPLAYMANAGER="sudo -u m startxfce4 -- vt7" |
Where at the current time, I've tried the last choice. When using lightdm I don't get an xfcde4 desktop, although I've tried serveral things that other posts have led me to believe might work. The last two choices seem to work in the same way, I guess implying that slim is not really doing much for me, given that I always want to login as user m. |
