Out of the blue vlc does come up with

Code:
Audio output failed:
The audio device "default" could not be used:
No such file or directory.

Code:
# lspci -v | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
02:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

some more output from vlc launched from command line:

Code:
VLC media player 2.0.9 Twoflower (revision 2.0.8a-20-g902dc4c)
[0x1ff61e8] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[0x20ba408] qt4 interface error: Unable to load extensions module
[0x7f4840000958] alsa audio output error: cannot open ALSA device "default": No such file or directory
[0x7f4840000958] main audio output error: no suitable audio output module
[0x7f4850c048f8] main decoder error: failed to create audio output

Code:
# emerge -av vlc

Well:

Preferences

-> Audio

-> Output Module: "Alsa Audio Output"

-> Device: "HDA Intel"

solved the prob. Fancy that vlc just resets itself...

Cheers!
