I noticed lately a lot of my GTK apps don't look good. Kind of blocky and plain. I know this isn't much to go on but does anyone know what the problem could be?

Could be anything... perhaps supplying/linking to an image of what you see could help :)

Anyway:
Do you have themes set for both gtk2 and gtk3?
Did they look good before? Are you themes compatible with the gtk+ versions you have installed?

If ^^ give you any hints to any problems try using your DE's settings to change themes and test the look, download and try new themes and test those (could also be missing some gtk engines or something). If you have no DE then lxappearance is a really nice tool that will set gtk2/gtk3 theme settings for you.

The problem apps seem to be GTK3 ones. I'm using the default xfce4 theme which must be GTK2 only. Are there any themes out there as similar as possible to the default xfce4 theme that support GTK2 and GTK3?

Ahh, well at least that has narrowed it down :)

However... I have absolutely no idea what Xfce default looks like so I can only point you towards this: http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=167 to find some theme(s) you like, they are all gtk3 specific but of course all should provide support for gtk2 for obvious reasons.

I have been told just now that xfce theme/appearance settings should set your gtk2 and gtk3 theme at the same time, so you should not need an external program or hackery once you found a theme that has support for both.

If you could post some screenshots, maybe that would help further narrowing your issue.

I like clearlooks-phenix from portage a lot. Please let me know if there are any GTK3 themes similar to Clearlooks that you might recommend.

You might want to look into Numix ... I don't know if it's similar to Clearlooks but I use it for all my GTK{2,3} applications and simply *love* it! :)

I just tried Numix but I don't like how dark it is. It looks like there is a separate light theme but only for purchase.

You may also want to try Zukitwo (It's even in portage), probably the most popular theme out there and it even comes with the window border/bar/button stuff for xfwm4 :)

I use "gtk-chtheme" to set my gtk themes. Actually I only really use it to set fonts for gtk apps, but I'm pretty sure it's capable of doing more than that

Thanks for your help everyone. I seem to be settling on Adwaita.

You're welcome :)
Glad you found something nice but I am kicking myself a little bit since I'm pretty sure Adwaita is the gtk3 replacement for clearlooks, should have thought of that.. doh!
