|
|
I wrote (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-971752.html) about a problem with viewing youtube videos. I solved the problem linked, but a week ago videos stopped working again. This time a black screen with white dots (like a CRT TV without antena) is shown (with an error message which I will paste as soon as I can get on my home PC). When right-clicking on the video window the html5 menu shows up (I am NOT in the html5 trial). I deleted the cookies and that didn't fix the problem (like the last time). Any input on that will be appriciated. Some videos do play, but they are played with the flash player.
Regards,
Georgi |

a year ago i could successfully play 90% of videos on youtube without having adobe flash installed. now it seems that webm is supported only occasionally. i crosschecked this with a friend on a windows machine and he could play videos i could not in html5, but i suppose that would be the h264 codec.
currently i am not in html5 beta (deleting cookies after each session) but i add this get parameter to the youtube URL when i want to switch: &html5=1. this works fine for only a few videos, in most cases there is a fallback to lightspark. _________________

Please report problems you see as bugs. One still open I'm aware of is https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=489688
Some further advice:
- always post the version number of Chromium, specific video URLs to reproduce, and whether you're using html5 or not, and chromium USE flags, especially bindist.
- try to reproduce with google-chrome
- try turning off hardware acceleration (Settings -> Advanced -> System -> Use hardware acceleration when available)
Please report back how that worked for you. Don't hesitate to file a bug if you're still seeing issues, whether it's google-chrome or chromium. I'd like both to provide the best possible experience on Gentoo. _________________ http://phajdan-jr.blogspot.com/ |

it is clear now that google does block html5 usage in favour of adobe flash. when you play your not working videos via youtube.com/tv it plays without problem without having adobe flash installed. _________________

Please see my post above and report a bug. I'd really like to help you, but need the info mentioned there. I don't think Google is blocking html5, especially with deprecation of npapi: http://blog.chromium.org/2013/09/saying-goodbye-to-our-old-friend-npapi.html . Still, having specific steps to reproduce the problem can help in actually identifying and fixing it. _________________ http://phajdan-jr.blogspot.com/ |

i am not sure if you are interested also in issues with firefox. please have a look before i open a bug:
Code: | $ emerge -pv firefox
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ~] www-client/firefox-24.1.1 USE="alsa bindist dbus gstreamer jit libnotify minimal startup-notification -custom-cflags -custom-optimization -debug (-pgo) -pulseaudio (-selinux) -system-cairo -system-icu -system-jpeg -system-sqlite -wifi" LINGUAS="de sk -af -ak -ar -as -ast -be -bg -bn_BD -bn_IN -br -bs -ca -cs -csb -cy -da -el -en_GB -en_ZA -eo -es_AR -es_CL -es_ES -es_MX -et -eu -fa -fi -fr -fy_NL -ga_IE -gd -gl -gu_IN -he -hi_IN -hr -hu -hy_AM -id -is -it -ja -kk -km -kn -ko -ku -lg -lt -lv -mai -mk -ml -mr -nb_NO -nl -nn_NO -nso -or -pa_IN -pl -pt_BR -pt_PT -rm -ro -ru -si -sl -son -sq -sr -sv_SE -ta -ta_LK -te -th -tr -uk -vi -zh_CN -zh_TW -zu" 0 kB |
here is a video that does require flash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd7dQh8u4Hc&html5=1
i joined the html5 trial also
this is the link that works fine for me: https://www.youtube.com/tv/#/watch?v=Dd7dQh8u4Hc&mode=transport
lately i upgraded to ff24 from ff17 to be able to use h264 via media-libs/gstreamer-1.0.10:1.0. this did not change the behavior.
------
by the way i still think it is googles fault. i post videos on off topic gentoo forums which can be played via html5, but after some time i noticed that i can not play some of the videos anymore despite the fact that i did not change my configuration. _________________

I can totally understand that.

Does it means it works for you? Could you explain more how to apply it (e.g. where in the url you put /tv/#/)? _________________ http://phajdan-jr.blogspot.com/ |

It's also possibly upstream Chromium bug. I used to experience the same on their nightly builds. |

you take a regular youtube link like: Code: | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd7dQh8u4Hc | and put 'tv/#/' behind youtube.com/
the outcome is Code: | https://www.youtube.com/tv/#/watch?v=Dd7dQh8u4Hc |
it is not the regular youtube player, but some kind of google tv player. for me it plays 100% of the videos that do not play the regular youtube way. without flash or h264. _________________

I had this problem (actually, I still do, while I wait for chromium to recompile). For some reason, bindist was in make.conf. It must have been there by default, or I added it without thinking. I can play some Youtube videos, but not others. I should have known that this was the problem, since Firefox installed as Aurora and Thunderbird installed as EarlyBird. I thought that it was sort of neat, and liked the names, but now I know that this was a problem (from my perspective) and not something new. For a short time I thought maybe the problem was with my audio setup since chromium displayed an audio error message in the console when I tried to play a video, or maybe something wrong in my .config since I copied it from another installation, or maybe my .cache directory was too small (it's mounted as tmpfs because I use an S.S.D.), but those were probably red herrings.
I actually remember this from installing Linux from Scratch -- I wondered why in the world I got Aurora instead of Firefox, until I read the documentation. Yeah, that's always helpful. |

I've noticed over the last few months that Youtube's gradually been degrading service for non-proprietary players - WebM playback is locked to 360p (when the video offers it at all) and they refuse to serve VP9 at all even though my version of Firefox supports it. Nice use of those millions they spent developing it... |

thats all because of the other milions they get when they support what the other paying party wants. _________________
