Hi, I'm new to Gentoo and trying to get my system up and running. I have a few years' experience with Linux in general but since I don't know Gentoo I could be making some pretty silly mistakes.

Code:
* ERROR: net-nds/openldap-2.4.35-r1::gentoo failed (compile phase):
 *   emake failed
 *
 * If you need support, post the output of `emerge --info '=net-nds/openldap-2.4.35-r1::gentoo'`,
 * the complete build log and the output of `emerge -pqv '=net-nds/openldap-2.4.35-r1::gentoo'`.
 * The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/net-nds/openldap-2.4.35-r1/temp/build.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/net-nds/openldap-2.4.35-r1/temp/environment'.
 * Working directory: '/var/tmp/portage/net-nds/openldap-2.4.35-r1/work/openldap-2.4.35'

Here's the buildlog. I don't have enough tools working yet to copy/paste conveniently but was able to piece this together with head and tail:

Any ideas what's wrong? This isn't the only "emake failed" error; some other packages fail in the same way. Something might get through a dozen dependencies and then choke on one of them. Anther that fails is dev-libs/pth-2.0.7-r3, with a similar message.

I suspect dev-libs/pth fails for a completely different reason, but anyway...
The error is:
Code:
../../build/mkdep: line 112: /tmp/mkdep18936: Permission denied

which looks pretty odd - shouldn't /tmp be world writable (or at least as close to it as it can) ?

I saw that and had just the same reaction: it's probably not the root problem, and in any case I can't imagine why it would be a problem (especially since I'm running this command as root).

Unfortunately I don't know much about Gentoo so I'm kinda stuck here. I did manage to find --keep-going which should let me install most of the (200+) dependencies of the packages I want overnight, so that if I am able to come up with a solution I won't need to wait another day for compilation.

I'm just glad I left my other OS intact, because the system as I have it is not usable. I'm not certain that I'm in a bootable state at the moment, but as long as I don't lose power... (I was pretty careful editing grub, but you can only be so sure when you're doing something for the first time.)
