hi,

In some situations with a pre-made m$$ partition needs the original mbr. In the case where a 2 partition was kept, overwriting the mbr wipes out the second partition.

So my question is whether it's possible to merge the first mbr with the second?

The reason for this it's because m$$ won't boot without original mbr. So let's say there's data kept in the second partition for convenince or a linux install it would be wipe out.

It makes it particularly annoying because it forces to install m$$ first then linux.

m$$ has a weird behaviour that remembers the sector where that partition is, partition number info is not sufficient to boot the sucker.

ps. the best way to screw a m$$ partition is to destroy mft. Found out the hard way :/

Why would you want to merge the mbr when both versions of grub support chainloading :?:

How to boot into Windows with Grub

oh gawd, again you and your mindless copy/pasta.

from the guide:

Code:
Your best option is to boot into Linux and edit /etc/grub.conf or /boot/grub.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst file and place following code for Windows XP or Windows Vista:

Utterly worthless with grub2, uefi, etc...

Besides, my question was no simply about booting, and you've tried yourself won't work that simple.

Every document on the net and here in the forums, related to grub gives chainloading as the standard procedure for multi-booting even with grub 2, and I know it works because I've done it. Said Documents also state that installing Windows first, then linux is the method that's known to be bulletproof, as in tried and tested. Your constant need to "buck the system" just because you can is very unnerving, not only in this post but others as well.

A bit of advice from someone who has used Gentoo for 9 years. Linux users find a method that works and stick with it because it works. We feel comfortable following methods that work, even if it isn't what we want to hear, because trying it the way you ask causes an unneeded headache, in that a new linux user following your advice would end up redoing 2 installs, because a new linux user is not comfortable using a repair prompt from a Windows Install CD they may or may not have, especially if this is their first install.

I gave the advice I did because there is no tool that does what you are asking. When I started with Redhat 12 year ago, I looked for that same tool. There never has been one unless you can write assembly language in the 1st 1,024 bytes of the 1st sector of a disk, which reinvents lilo and both versions of grub, along withe rewriting the closed source code of the ntloader used to boot modern versions of Windows.
