Summary: Apple's move to make its latest OS update free brings it up to speed with other developments. The lesson: The OS is less of a product and more of a jump-off point for other services.

Well, not so free but cheaper than Windows 7 is the new Windows 8.1 full install which is AU$100. Still overpriced, but it's a start.

The cost bothers me a little less than having to call someone to activate it, or not liking if I put it on different hardware. However, getting rid of Technet, that was just stupid.

Do you have to call? I think you can do it via the internets. You have 90 days or something anyway, it's probably the least painful aspect of Windows...the non-transferable nature of the licence, as you mentioned, no central driver database, limited control of interface, no real command line mode...

Aaaaah the hell days of having to deal with windows and dual-boot. It's like having an abusive parent, it all seems so normal at the time.

A lot of it is just as half-baked as open source, too. Take smartcards and biometrics, for example. Very weak.

I'm still using Vista (never had the problem with it others claimed) and an XP install. The problems with having to call in were widely reported. I don't know if they still operate that way. I've not had an issue with interface control, its never been something I spent a lot of time tweaking in Linux (in fact, its usually an irritation in Linux). Since PowerShell, the CLI argument is pretty much eliminated.
