You're probably still in the /mnt/gentoo/... directory you want to unmount. Happened to me, too. Just cd / and try again.

| If you want bleeding edge without having to deal with compiling, give Arch Linux a shot. I ran it for the longest time and it's a wonderful distro. I switched to Gentoo recently on my PC but my Wife's PC still runs Arch. But remember that these are not your typical user friendly distros. You have to at least have some Linux knowledge under your belt. The BSDs are great too but just like Arch & Gentoo, they require some knowledge. |

I find that Gentoo is well worth the trouble. The handbook provides meticulous detailed instructions. It comes down to following those instructions.
Finally, you don't need to watch your computer while it's compiling. It's a machine, and if you go away and do other productive things while some of the more time consuming processes are being done, it will wait for you.
My first installation was on a 486 when the system was not nearly as stable as it is today and when the instructions were still a work-in-progress, working from a handbook that had been printed out on a dot-matrix printer. It went well, and I'm still doing it. That was 10 years ago.

When building the kernel, as well as using the commands "make" and "make modules_install", try make install to automatically install the kernel in /boot. Running grub2-mkconfig will then write a complete grub configuration file for you:

just symlink grub on grub2.

Glad I read your post, as I hadn't noticed this.
Could someone please tell me why this was done? Is there a forum post or news item about the change and the reason? I just want to make sure I know what has happened and its impacts, that's all.
