Next step: Usage of spaces :D.

No, seriously: The next difficult thing will be getting a kernel up and running. I recommend either using genkernel or Pappy's Kernel Seeds (www.kernel-seeds.org). I think I've never recommended genkernel before, but it's a safe method, it seems and gets you there.
Pappy's seeds are better but a little more difficult to use. You'll probably learn more from them, though.

It doesn't, that's why I said it and provided a link. :wink:
They're pre-made .config files that you have to flesh out. They're known working configs.

Congratulations!

Kernel is step 7, you have a couple pages to go before you get there.

I don't think it says "pappy" in there. Pappy is a guy on the forum. He does kernels that work. It might be just my opinion, but I'm guessing he's helped about 72% of all Gentoo users learn how to compile their kernels, one-on-one. People who are smarter than me might have done it on their own. He certainly helped me out even though I thought I knew what I was doing.

Between Neddy and Pappy, I don't think Gentoo would be nearly as much fun without them as it is with them. They know stuff the rest of us don't know, and if you talk nicely to them they might help you.

May I present Pappy's Kernel Seeds, and his Forum Announcement. I wouldn't expect you to read all the way through to Part 5: Pappy's Kernel Seeds Part V,unless it's for History's sake...

good job, i wish i had linux when i was 13. step 7 is a major obstacle and they are getting you ready for it. i use manual kernel building of this wiki page... https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel

you might want to familiarize your self with this wiki article also. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Troubleshooting

gogobebe2,

Gentoo installs never fail. You can get varying degrees of success though :)
Messing it up so badly you need to start again is beyond the talents of a Gentoo noob.
So when it goes wrong, which happens to us all from time to time, you fix it and learn from the problem.
In fact, you learn more from fixing problems than you do when it just works.

Reinstalling is a bad habit you may have picked up from another OS. With Gentoo, reinstalling robs you of the educational experience and only offers you a chance to make a different mistake.

even screwing up permissions deep in the machines gears can be resolved, though not pleasant. there is a command to generate lists of every package installed on your system, though it is escaping me, and not documented @ https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Gentoo_Cheat_Sheet

i am so very fond of the wiki system, because you can document to the best of your ability, and others can correct mistakes to make it that much more correct, then is recursively applicable, inflicting knowledge, and power onto the community.

i do keep a scorched earth policy, if i mess up, its formatted and files i save are migrated to the blank slate fresh install. my laptop is the tightest knit, and most refined gentoo system i have generated yet. after writing many wikis, and installing excessive quantities of packages to the base system, it becomes a security nightmare, and gets flushed out to the sea.

like music, its not always what is there, but what is not there also. neddy that hardened gentoo router post completely blew my mind, can you please document how to network kvm clients to the host in the wiki, i don't know how to do that, and others are posting on the forums about it not being documented.

1 question:
I unpacked the stage3 that I downloaded and I am not up to step 5.c
I typed:
Code:
nano -w /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/make.conf
and it has nothing in it. No text at all. Do I have to type it in or does it automatically show up?[/code]

No, there's something wrong there. The default make.conf should have some text.
Are you sure you spelt everything correctly? When editing config files I often type [whatever].cong.
Nano opens the file, even though it is not yet created, and lets you edit it, so you don't get an error message like "Couldn't open, file not found."

Did you cd to /mnt/gentoo before you unpacked it :?:

I jsut wanted to make sure this is correct before continuing
Ok my make.conf looks like this:
# These settings were set by the ca........
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for more
# detailed example
CFLAGS="-02 -march=amd64 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is something that.....
# Please consult http://www.gentoo....
CHOST="x86_64-pc linux-gnu"
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building
USE="bindist mmx sse sse2"
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
DISTDIR="${PORTDIR}/distfiles"
PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"

(I added the- march because I read on the document - I also added MAKEOPTS any thing else?[/code])

-march is incorrect, try:

Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
and go here: Safe CFLAGS. If you need help, post the output of the cat command here.

In short, you can't use a march greater than your output. Example if you run the command and get a cpuid of 45 you can't use 60, you must use 42

[edit]Changed Can to Cannot[/edit]

Code:
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
DISTDIR="${PORTDIR}/distfiles"
PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"

These are defaults - you do not need it.

If you are unsure what to put in -march, -march=native is always good solution. Btw pls paste output of:
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo

EDIT:
oh eyoung100 was faster :)

nano -w /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/make.conf

this is an absolute path, its not a relative path. it starts at / so cding into it from any directory should work.... ./some/other/path . = pwd appended to the path

your problem im pretty sure, is that you need to chroot & sync.

It says my cpu family is 6, model, 26, and model name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07H(I added the march because I read on the document)GHz
But when I went to: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Safe_CFLAGS, there is none with model 26?

That's not why I asked that, the OP wasn't in /mnt/gentoo when the tarball was untarred.

In that case you must use model 15

Logic:
15 < 26 < 42

Code:
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

Re: Deleting, it doesn't matter as they are defaults.

No, but those are just useless
and I think it should be

EDIT:
Damn, he did it again :D
