Hi everyone,

after some years using ubuntu, I would like try gentoo. I am working on my old test computer which is an IBM Thinkpad T43. I would like to install from the CD-ROM as a first try. After booting from disc and both before and after loading the kernel my shift is not working properly:
I can use "shift + a" to get "A", but "shift + 7" won't give me "/" on my german keyboard but "7" instead. Even for the default US keyboard "shift + number" is not working.
Any idea what I should do?

Best regards
Michael

The gentoo version is from 10.10.2013 for x86. (amd64 is not supported by my hardware)

If I understand you correctly, this is an issue with the install CD keymap?

In this case, the best solution is to use The System Rescue CD as your install medium. This will not change the installation at all. The System Rescue CD is known to have better hardware support so it probably has better keymap support. You can probably also use your Ubuntu live CD to install Gentoo.

Either way, nothing on the CD is used on your final install.

Yes, that's correct. I will try installing using another livedvd. Hopefully, after installing gentoo, my keyboard will work out of the box....

It's not only a issue with install CD. I have the same issue on my Gentoo. The shift key In text console does not work. Can't login as I have upper case letters in my password. I can login as root (not so complicated password), but work in shell is almost impossible. I miss all chars created by using Shift key.
