Are there any packages with .doc support that are smaller than libreoffice? |

If you can't or don't want to compile libreoffice, you can emerge prebuilt libreoffice binaries: libreoffice-bin |

Does Abiword have good .doc support? I haven't tried it in a while. |

It's worked fine for me, I don't use MS Office much though. |

Neither do I. I just want to be able to open some .doc file when it gets thrown my way. |

Yeah, it should be fine then, exactly what I use it for. |

Evince seems to have an experimental support for powerpoint. _________________ Kind regards,

If you're a KDE user, Calligra supports much of the same stuff as libreoffice. You can tailor which bits get installed by putting say CALLIGRA_FEATURES="words sheets braindump" into make.conf.
AFAIR Calligra Word doesn't aim for 100% fidelity to Microsoft's formatting, and I've not used it enough to say if it's robust/sufficient for serious use, but it seems to handle all the .doc files I get in emails, albeit sometimes with bad layout. _________________ Greybeard |

That's excellent news about evince. Hopefully abiword, gnumeric, and evince can take the place of libreoffice here.
I use xfce4 but calligra does look nice. I'm tempted to just go ahead and install cyrus-sasl and kdepimlibs. |
