I am currently working to sort out the confusion on my system with the emul-linux* files (in other words working to remove /upgrade all packages with dependencies on them). I have now got as far as grub legacy. This requires app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs. I realise I can avoid this problem with grub2. I followed the instructions to install grub2, and everything seems OK. However, sometimes when I boot, it goes through the kernel startup, then starts the OpenRC process. After the kernel modules, it then starts (this is typed in after making a video of the startup on my phone!)

This doesn't happen every time, but I cannot identify any pattern. Grub legacy has never been a problem, and even now works faultlessly (I chain to grub2 at the moment while setting it up).
Can any of you point me in the direction of a solution? I do have a video of the whole boot sequence if that is helpful

| Solved! I have a backup drive attached to a USB3 port, and when booting from grub2, it allocates the USB drive to /dev/sdb, and then allocates the drive with the /home partition to /dev/sdc. Since the backup drive doesn't have a sdb3 partition, it fails as shown above. I am not going to go and label the drive, and allocate it via a label rather than a definitive address! |
