I would ask about cups flag regarding xorg installation.
xorg-server pulls a cups related packages, that much more larger than xorg-server itself.

Code:
emerge -av xorg-server
Total: 165 packages (165 new), Size of downloads: 493,712 kB

Code:
USE="-cups" emerge -av xorg-server
Total: 68 packages (68 new), Size of downloads: 179,233 kB

How does X depends on cups?
Do I really need to install cups for running X?
I do not planning to use printing right now, may be in future.

Thanks.

No, you don't need to have cups enabled. For example I don't have a printer and I have -cups in my make.conf. And Xorg runs very well for my needs.

You may enable the cups USE flag when the need for printing arises. It's just a matter of editing make.conf and running emerge:
Code:
emerge -uDN @world --with-bdeps=y

Yes, I have already set up a system, all seems fine. Linux incompatible with printing, so I no need cups at all, at least until Linux becomes compatible with it.

I can confirm. There are a lot of printers that are compatible with Linux. Please check the following websites:
