|
|
I have a SparcServer 1000 box with 8 60MHz SuperSparc processors in it and a pair of 9.1Gig drives. I have tried loading Ultralinux, Zoot, Gentoo, and Mandrake, all have failed to even start loading except Mandrake which I have been able to get to load but upon rebooting I get thorough some preliminary stuff and it halts at: "VFS: Cannot open root device 00:00" and the next line is "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root FS on 00:00" and it then tells me to press Stop-A to return to the boot prom.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not as familiar with the SS1000E but does it use Sbus slots? What kind of scsi card (or chip) is it using? _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

It uses an XDbus on which the Mbus processors are tied to the memory as well as the SCSI boot controler and the SBus devices. All SCSI controlers counted there are 10 in this box, 8 of which are fast SCSI2 and 2 that are FastWide SCSI2. There are controlers made by AMD, Emulux, NEC, Qlogic, and the boot controler that the 2 9.1Gig drives and the CDROM drive are hanging off of is by Xilinx (XC3330). There is basic info at suns web site on the units but nothing in real detail.

I gave up on mine, because the liveCd wouldn't even boot it. It's a 85MHzx8, 1.5GB RAM, and 1 9.1 GB internal, and a 6x18.2GB external array.
I may have to try a temporary Mandrake install, and see if I can chroot and install Gentoo. _________________ Gentoo systems.

This is probably due to the fact that sun4d is seriously broken in 2.4. If you can find an old debian or redhat install with a 2.2 kernel, you might be able to get a working system. |

OK, that helps a little bit but what if I want a modern kernel to run on the 1000, where do I go from here? If I can't get it to run then I guess that I will have to get a copy of Solaris instead.

If this is the case then how do all these people get it to run on Sparc 5, 10, 20 machines, they are sun4d machines arn't they? |

Those are sun4m. Sun4d systems are different, using the XDbus vs the Sbus and Mbus.
The SS1000E was supported up to Solaris 8 _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe
