PostPosted: Sun Oct 06, 2013 8:50 pm    Post subject: Dual Monitors: Lost Screen 0 Which Had Worked Since Last May Reply with quote

I have had 2 monitors with my nVidia system (nVidia-drivers) which I set up last May. For some reason a week or so ago, I lost the screen on 1 of the monitors. My right screen works fine, but the left screen, which boots into text mode, is completely missing (eg: it's blank and KDE doesn't know it exists) when X is running. I don't know what I changed to cause this, and I my troubleshooting is not getting me anywhere.

Interestingly, if I boot to knoppix, the blank screen comes to life, so I don't think I have a hardware issue.

My setup:

Screen 0: Fed from an motherboard-mounted nVidia chip, shows the grub2 boot screen in text mode, as well as the text-mode login. The framebuffer appears to work since I get 4 tuxes displayed while the system boots. I type "startx" from this monitor to launch X & KDE.

Screen 1: Fed from a PCIE nVidia card, the screen is rotated into portrait mode. It now is the sole X screen since the Screen 0 is no longer recognized by X.

I'll post the entire Xorg.0.log, but here is the critical section where it fails to "assign" with screen 0

[ 46.643] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failing initialization of X screen 0

The other screen has a similar section, but it "assigns" with "CRT-1" without any difficulty.

I have run the program "nvidia-settings", and it only sees the rotated screen. It doesn't see the missing screen at all.

I'm using an /etc/xorg.conf file that I created with the nvidia-settings program, when everything worked. If I delete this configuration file, X won't start at all.

I'd appreciate any suggestions of what else to try, or where else to look for a solution. TIA!

Here is my full Xorlg.0.log and /etc/xorg.conf

Nvidia uses xrandr and prime now to configure multiple monitors. Probably the setup stopped working when you upgraded xorg.

You need to create a new X server configuration without Xinerama.

I solved this problem, but not in a very elegant way.

I tried several attacks:

1. Reinstall gentoo from scratch, but don't build the "testing" (~AMD64) branch
2. Convert from nVidia to nouveau
3. Futz around with xrandr command options.
4. Futz around with /etc/X11/xorg.conf

What I finally did was buy a new nvidia card with dual outputs, and shut down the on-board nvidia chip. This worked, except KDE would not remember my preferred orientation (one screen was rotated 90 degrees). I therfore added this line to my .xinitrc file:

xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --auto --rotate left --pos 0x0 --output DVI-I-2 --auto --rotate normal --left-of DVI-I-1
startkde

Now it works fine. I don't even need an xorg.conf and I get the full benefit of compiz in a very nice dual screen KDE environment. The problem, I decided, was trying to drive 2 separate video chips.
