Hi, I have been trying to install layman, add some suggested repos with it, but when I emerge I get :

Code:

peed cf # emerge -av cairo-dock cairo-dock-plugins
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: sys-libs/zlib-1.2.7
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.1-r1

 * IMPORTANT: 7 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

 * IMPORTANT: 2 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
 * man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "cairo-dock".

emerge: searching for similar names...
emerge: Maybe you meant any of these: x11-misc/cairo-clock, dev-ml/cairo-ocaml, media-fonts/cardo?

Looks like it doesn't find the packages ... I unmasked them too. Is it because those actually don't contain the ebuild ?

Code:

speed cf # layman -l

 * DuPol                     [Git       ] (git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/user/DuPol.git                   )
 * quarks                    [Git       ] (git://www.startux.de/quarks.git                                )
 * rion                      [Mercurial ] (http://rion-overlay.googlecode.com/hg/                         )
 * sabayon                   [Git       ] (git://github.com/Sabayon/for-gentoo.git                        )
 * sunrise                   [Git       ] (git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/proj/sunrise-reviewed.git        )
 * vaca                      [Git       ] (git://github.com/hashashin/gentoo-vaca-overlay.git             )
 * write2David               [Git       ] (git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/user/write2David.git             )

Thanks !

You need to Fix:
Code:
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: sys-libs/zlib-1.2.7
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: dev-libs/libxml2-2.9.1-r1
First.

Then Go Here:
Glx-Dock / Cairo-Dock

Fixed those lines, still wont emerge ...

Code:

speed cf # emerge -av cairo-dock cairo-dock-plugins

 * IMPORTANT: 7 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

According to the Online Git Repository, stable versions no longer exist, so emerge is correct in finding nothing. Now you must add:
Code:
echo "x11-misc/cairo-dock **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "x11-misc/cairo-dock-plugins **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "x11-misc/cairo-dock **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords/dock.keywords
echo "x11-plugins/cairo-dock-plugins **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords/dock.keywords
echo "x11-misc/cairo-dock **" >> /etc/portage/package.use/dock.use
echo "x11-plugins/cairo-dock-plugins **" >> /etc/portage/package.use/dock.use
echo ">=dev-libs/libdbusmenu-0.6.2-r1 gtk" >> /etc/portage/package.use/dock.use

"trying" to install layman?

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Layman#Installing_layman

first 4 root commands should be all it takes, my guess... /etc/portage/make.conf missing the layman source line. his echos should of worked....

mkultra@mksrv ~ $ cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | grep cairo
x11-misc/cairo-dock **
x11-misc/cairo-dock-plugins **

mkultra@mksrv ~ $ cat /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords | grep dock
=x11-plugins/cairo-dock-plugins-9999-r2 **

& its found and installed on my system.... not sourcing the layman repositories would probably result in not finding ebuilds... source /var/lib/layman/make.conf in /etc/portage/make.conf

Sorry, I don't get you. I have added many layman repositories but on my reads I have never seen such way to source portage with layman repos. I just add the layman repos and update the, same as with portage. I have those lines in the portage config files and when I try to emerge cairo-dock and cairo-pluguins it won't emerge.

According to the Gentoo Wiki: Layman and the layman elog:
Code:
emerge --ask app-portage/layman
echo "source /var/lib/layman/make.conf" >> /etc/portage/make.conf <-- This is what you need to add

@chromaf: I may disagree with threesixes nick :P, but if he can install it, then something is wrong with your configuration.
