PostPosted: Thu Aug 15, 2013 5:22 pm    Post subject: KDM - >2 minute delay logging in Reply with quote

Since updating KDE this month (maybe 2 weeks ago or so?) one of my machines is suffering a greater than 2 minute delay when logging in using KDM. If I boot the machine with KDM disabled in rc-update I can use startx and KDE starts as normal. However using KDM the login dialog disappears and I see the login wallpaper and nothing else for greater than 2 minutes. There is no disk activity. The machine just sits. After this delay I see the KDE startup graphics that show the 5 icons which proceeds normally and then I get the desktop. From there on everything operates normally.

As best I can tell the problem is only logging into KDE. If I switch to XFCE4 then the login is immediate. Coming back to KDE I get the delay again. It happens with both use accounts that use KDE. I've not tried creating any new user accounts at this point.

While it feels like some sort of network timeout, networking is up and running before I run startx, at least so much as being able to ping a few websites, etc.

Looking at /var/log/messages and dmesg there's nothing much happening, nor in dmesg. Both posted below. Those ata messages always seem to come post login.

Before filing a bug report I thought I'd ask folks where I might look for more info. Not sure where KDM would place any other messages or what it might be looking for.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

I am having this exact same issue, did you ever figure out the cause? I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd share!

Thanks,
Alex

Try switching to console and then switching back to graphics screen. It will then go on as normal. I found out by chance when I tried to look, whats going on in the background. I never did find anything unusual but when I switched back the stall had gone away. We have one type of machines which show this behaviour occasionally the others are not affected.
