PostPosted: Mon Sep 16, 2013 3:16 pm    Post subject: Why is this website crashing X on my laptop? Reply with quote

I thought I had a problem with my touchpad (thread here) but I don't think that was the issue. I can consistently get my ThinkPad T520 to crash (X dies, nothing in the logs either for xorg-server or the kernel, keyboard/mouse input gone, black screen with the mouse pointer showing) by going to turnitin.com, logging in and using the site. Sometimes it locks up while I'm typing in my password, sometimes I get to log in and start using it and it lets me use it a little before locking up. This is in Firefox 23.0. The laptop is stable as long as I avoid that site (although clearly I have not exhaustively checked every other site on the internet to see if any others cause similar behavior.) I used this site earlier this year without problems. Any ideas on how to track down the issue?

Here are the System Requirements. I would suspect its Java that is causing the issue... Try using oracle-jre-bin as your Java Plugin

Yeah, the system requirements never include linux but the site works just fine on my gentoo desktop at home (also Firefox 23.0) and a debian box I have here at work. In any case I don't think a website should be able to take down X.

I changed the java plugin to oracle-1.7.0.25 (thought I had already purged idedtea but I had not). The site still crashes X. Even the System Requirements page took it down. Any other ideas? I'm not ever sure where to start looking.

When the X server crashes, a stack trace will be printed to Xorg.0.log (which will be renamed to Xorg.0.log.old on X server restart). This log and dmesg will probably give some information about what happened.

It should print a stack trace and yet it doesn't. I get no errors in the logs except something about the trackpad which isn't important. Dmesg likewise shows nothing out of the ordinary and the kernel logs show nothing either. That's why I'm stumped as to where to look. It just dumps me out of FVWM, locks the keyboard and mouse, shows me a black screen with a mouse pointer, sometimes I can see the virtual terminal login prompt, sometimes just a nonblinking underline cursor in the upper left. Here is the Xorg.0.log.old for your perusal

I logged the output of fvwm as it crashed and here is the last output from the log.
Quote:
XIO: fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server ":0"^M
XIO: fata after 3892 requests (3892 known processed) with 0 events rema af after 2007 requests (1925 known processed) with 0 events remaining.^M
gkrellm: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.
firefox: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.
thunderbird: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.
plugin-container: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.

This only happens on firefox. The site works fine in opera but those are the only two browsers I have tried. Any ideas why firefox is triggering fatal IO errors in XIO?

Try running firefox from a terminal
Code:
firefox www.somesite.com >> ffcrash.txt

where somesite is the offending page

Post ffcrash.txt
