PostPosted: Thu Sep 12, 2013 8:15 pm    Post subject: missing vala/gir stuff or not configured? [solved] Reply with quote

I originally had ~nothing of gnome and wanted to install 3.8. a number of pkgs that have or use this vala stuff always spit these out:

Code:
error: Package `GObject-2.0' not found in specified Vala API directories or GObject-Introspection GIR directories
error: Package `Gio-2.0' not found in specified Vala API directories or GObject-Introspection GIR directories

I'd get them for "GLib-2.0" in some pkgs, other things in others, etc. it seems whatever vala needs to be configured for is missing/incomplete?

I've spent a week of googling, reading posts and whatnot, trying all kinds of fixes/workarounds (removing vala-xx or multiple vala, adding /usr/lib/gir* and /usr/share/vala to xdg_data_dirs, linking around in /usr/share/vala*/vapi, linking "glib-2.0" to "GLib-2.0", running a specific pkg's makefile "/usr/bin/vala* ..." myself to work out how to resolve it, etc.).

since I haven't gotten anywhere I thought I'd post output from net-libs/gssdp failure to see if someone knows what needs to be done.

I happen to have these emerge'd atm:

localhost / # epm -qa|grep vala
vala-0.14.2-r2
vala-0.18.1
vala-0.16.1-r2
vala-common-0.18.1

localhost / # epm -qa|grep gob
pygobject-2.28.6-r53
pygobject-3.8.1
gobject-introspection-1.36.0
gobject-introspection-common-1.36.0

if I need to include other things just let me know and I will.

thanks.

I think you need update the portage tree
Code:
emerge --sync
and then select the highest version on vala
Code:
eselect vala list
.

thanks, is there a way to resolve this w/o doing a sync? many of the threads/mailing lists I found on others having this same vala/gir prob were from before may - june meaning they fixed it w/a portage tree (or source tars) as old or older than mine.

the main reason I don't want to sync is because there's no way to know if it actually fixes the prob; I also read in a couple places gnome 3.8.x requires systemd which I have no intention of using:

http://wiki.gentoo.org/index.php?title=GNOME/3.8-upgrade-guide&redirect=no

http://my.opera.com/pacho/blog/2013/07/24/gnome-3-8-requiring-systemd-on-gentoo

currently my portage tree has early 3.8 stuff so I'd like to just keep that given so far nothing is insisting on any systemd stuff.

Post the config.log file for that package (in ${WORKDIR}/${P} from ebuild).

I'm guessing when a var is set in config.log that affirms it exists? I checked anyway and these are all there:

/usr/share/gir-1.0
/usr/share/gobject-introspection-1.0/Makefile.introspection
/usr/lib64/girepository-1.0

I'm not sure what this means:

HAVE_VAPIGEN_FALSE='#'
HAVE_VAPIGEN_TRUE=''

but I show:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 172824 Sep 12 13 01:11 /usr/bin/vapigen-0.14
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 172824 Sep 12 13 01:27 /usr/bin/vapigen-0.16
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 172856 Sep 12 13 01:41 /usr/bin/vapigen-0.18

incidentally I'm running this from a chroot, could that have anything to do with my trouble? this is what I do to enter it (I have no gnome stuff on the host):

mount -t proc none /system/core2_build/proc
mount --rbind /dev /system/core2_build/dev
mount --rbind /sys /system/core2_build/sys
chroot /system/core2_build /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile

Try re-install vala (0.14):
Code:
(root)# emerge -pv --oneshot =dev-lang/vala-0.14*

thanks so much! your re-emerge suggestion has isolated the trouble. the problematic pkgs are installed, the rest of the gnome pkgs are installing and I've yet to hit another instance of op prob.

since not many pkgs have been getting merged due to constantly hitting the gir/vala aborts, when your suggestion to re-emerge succeeded I saw something like this (only appears at the end when something installs successfully):

Quote:
note that "/usr/share" is not in xdg* search path...

I checked both env.d/*xdg*, made sure "/usr/share" was there, reset env, uninst the older valas, installed 20.1 and it just blew through gssdp and installed it - hurray :)

I don't know why what config.log shows being found wasn't sufficient but after a week of going in circles I don't care, it's finally working.

thanks again for the help.
