Greetings!
I just rented a dedicated server from a hosting company. They installed CentOS on it and I requested they boot Gentoo livecd so I can install Gentoo instead.
Here is the CD image I told them to use:
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/current-iso/install-amd64-minimal-20130816.iso
Here are the server specs:
CPU : Intel E3 1240 V2
Chassis: SuperMicro CSE-512L-200B 1U
Hard Drives: Western Digital 1TB RE4 FBYX SATA
Motherboard : SuperMicro X9SCM-F
Power Supply : SuperMicro SC512 200W
RAM: 4x Super Talent 8GB DDR3 1333 ECC
Here are the instructions I gave the provider:
-insert CD, select it as boot device and press Enter to boot the default kernel
-issue the passwd command to set the root password, communicate this to me
-issue the ifconfig command to find out what the network interface is named. it may or may not be eth0
-issue 'net-setup eth0' where eth0 should be the name of the Internet facing Ethernet adapter.
-follow the prompts from net-setup to set the IP, subnet mask, gateway, dns, etc.
-issue the command /etc/init.d/sshd start
This morning I got a response to the ticket I opened:
Hello,
It appears gentoo may not be a possibility. The OS does not possess the network drives needed to operate the server. I believe you will need to use another OS.
My question:
Has anyone successfully installed Gentoo on this hardware before?
If so, did you have any trouble with the livecd ethernet?
Thanks,

Just use another LiveCD, like Sysrescuecd.
While we don't have the same System operating, we got plenty other Supermicros, no problem.
Bye
