I've recently started seing things like "Watch X movie free" and "Buiton bags", is there anything we can do against this hijacked/created accounts to stop them from spamming BEFORE the issue gets out of proportion?

Moved from Other Things Gentoo to Gentoo Forums Feedback.

We do have a lot of measures in place to prevent spammers before they can post and we stop a lot of spam from getting through. For the remainder the best thing to do is report it and the spammer will be dealt with.

Because nobody whining about it (especially the loudest ones) has put their money where their mouth is and ported any of the f.g.o-specific plugins to phpBB3.

Patches Welcome.

1. Spam is not a security issue, it's a nuisance issue. You can have a human post spam just as well - I could just make an account by hand and start putting advertisements for a product and I can usually get past captcha (some sites' captchas are simply insane and even humans have trouble with them...)

2. phpbb3 is not invulnerable to spam. I was using Centurylink Forums (at internetcommunity.centurylink.com) which uses phpbb3 and it got inundated with spam, and they subsequently shut down because they were tired of deleting and did not want to make a new captcha.

It is conceivable that someone could hack Gentoo forums for email addresses and login passwords, but I'd hope people use different passwords for different sites... and well, it'd still be a currently unknown exploit mechanism. If someone has seen a recent phpbb2 exploit, I'm sure there would be tons of people jumping on fixing it without phpbb.org's help. At the very least, if someone spots one please file a bug on bugs.gentoo.org , I'm sure someone would be happy to fix the bug!
