How do I get some help doing things I don't know how to do?

I have a shared host that is failing me. Badly. I need to get a VPS Gentoo webserver box rolling so I can take matters into my own hands.

I'm not totally clueless, there are just some holes in my knowledge and since I've never been able to figure it out in almost 10 years of using Gentoo, I just plain need someone to do it for me/show me.

My needs are not gentoo specific, it's just what I'm using for the server. I don't know things like email, domains, ssl certs... Stuff specific to web servers.

My experience is in other fields and I'm getting no help, not even when I offer to pay... BTC preferred, but I can do fake money if you wish.

This is sad...

PM me if you have the time and experience and want to make some money.

This is a plush minefield.

I currently use HostVirtual and can hook you up with a working hardened-sources-3.8 configuration on one of their fully virtualized options.

Domains I can help you with. There is a three step process to do this properly.

1. Register a domain from a registrar.
2. Configure your domain to point to HostVirtual's name servers, which are ns[1..3].hostvirtual.com
3. Configure HostVirtual DNS to map that domain name to the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses of your server.

I can also provide you with iptables and ip6tables rules that take the IETF's latest suggestions into account. ICMPv6 filtering is a developing subject. My rules also do things like drop obviously spoofed packets.

EDIT: Regarding your SSL certificates, what's your current domain name situation like? Can you control what it points to? You may be able to reuse that cert. You can't just make your own and have peoples' browsers accept them.

I don't have a use anything you've mentioned, but I appreciate the offer.

I apologize. I guess I wasn't clear. I guess I'm going to have to do it myself.

I just need help setting up stuff I don't know how to do and for which I have never in my life found human-readable documentation or explanation. That's all.

I realize self-signed certs throw a warning on all modern browsers. I can install and configure most of what I need. There are just a few things that have always eluded me.

It would probably be easier to do as much as you can, then provide a problem with specifics of what you've tried and what you've looked at for documentation. Then people can help with those specific problems.

Ugh, I'm instantly reminded why I quit using gentoo... Broken out of the box, circular errors that can't be fixed... I can't even get started working on what I want until I repair everything that's wrong with it... And there's probably nothing that can be done to fix it...

Won't emerge anything because the profile is invalid... No matter what profile I select, it tells me it's invalid and won't emerge anything...

For something to be broken out of the box, it must first be shipped in the box already assembled.

Had to revert EAPI file contents all the way back to "2" just to get emerge to run. But, it still refuses to do anything claiming dependency ebuilds don't exist.

Won't emerge anything, have to upgrade portage. Can't upgrade portage, refuses to emerge anything. Cute.

Code:
server portage # emerge portage
!!! Unable to parse profile: '/etc/make.profile'
!!! ParseError: Profile contains unsupported EAPI '5': '/usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/13.0/eapi'
!!! If you have just changed your profile configuration, you should revert
!!! back to the previous configuration. Due to your current profile being
!!! invalid, allowed actions are limited to --help, --info, --sync, and
!!! --version.
server portage # echo "2" > /usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/13.0/eapi
server portage # emerge portage
!!! Unable to parse profile: '/etc/make.profile'
!!! ParseError: Profile contains unsupported EAPI '5': '/usr/portage/profiles/eapi-5-files/eapi'
!!! If you have just changed your profile configuration, you should revert
!!! back to the previous configuration. Due to your current profile being
!!! invalid, allowed actions are limited to --help, --info, --sync, and
!!! --version.
server portage # echo "2" > /usr/portage/profiles/eapi-5-files/eapi
server portage # emerge portage

 * IMPORTANT: 7 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "dev-lang/python:3.2".
(dependency required by "sys-apps/portage-2.2.0" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "portage" [argument])

server portage # emerge python

 * IMPORTANT: 7 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=dev-libs/libffi-3.0.11" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- dev-libs/libffi-3.0.13-r1 (masked by: EAPI 5)
- dev-libs/libffi-3.0.13 (masked by: EAPI 5)
- dev-libs/libffi-3.0.12 (masked by: EAPI 5)
- dev-libs/libffi-3.0.11 (masked by: EAPI 4)

The current version of portage supports EAPI '2'. You must upgrade to a
newer version of portage before EAPI masked packages can be installed.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
(dependency required by "dev-lang/python-2.7.3-r3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "python" [argument])

If I set EAPI, whatever the hell that is, to anything above 2, emerge just plain won't run. It just exits. Unfixable, circular errors from fresh install. It's not even an hour old.

Gentoo is always such a mess of broken shit...

The install may be young, but the stage 3 used to create it was evidently somewhat older. Unlike wine, whiskey, certain cheeses and various cured meat products, stage 3 tarballs do not generally improve with age. Try using something from this year.

The is very much the equivalent of blaming your car for not running after deliberately driving it into a bridge abutment at highway speeds, then replacing the battery cables with fuel lines. Use the tools provided how they were meant to be used and only replace parts that you actually understand well enough to manipulate properly and it will actually work.

This sounds like a case of "If I didn't learn it in college it isn't important". Oh well, good luck.

If you want someone to talk you through, try the http://wizpert.com platform. I's a startup AFAIK, but it already provides some services like this, a virtual helpdesk.
