Conveniently, right when UN weapons inspectors happen to be making their visit nearby, Syrian Government forces have allegedly shelled a bunch of villages with poison gas. It defies logic. This was either done by ruthless elements of the insurgency (e.g. Salafist militants / al Qaeda) to draw Western intervention on their behalf (remember Obama said chemical weapons was a "Red Line"), or it was done by U.S. government operatives to justify American military action providing a convenient distraction of the American people from Obama's foreign policy and economic failures and his authoritarian abuses of power and violations of the Constitution. (The outrage over the growing domestic spying scandal does not seem to be going away, despite the Obama describing it, along with their tactics of abusing the Federal law enforcement apparatus to intimidate, harass and threaten political detractors, as "fake scandals.")

Syria opposition claims hundreds dead in 'gas' attacks

Government forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have carried out a "poisonous gas" attack near the capital Damascus that has left hundreds dead, Syrian opposition groups claimed Wednesday.

Anti-regime activists are saying that regime forces fired "rockets with poisonous gas heads" in the attack. The number of reported deaths has ranged from 100 to close to 800. The claims and reports could not be independently confirmed.

The Syrian government said there was no truth to the allegations "whatsoever" that chemical weapons were used.

"They are an attempt to divert the United Nations commission on chemical weapons from carrying out its mission," the state-run SANA news agency said.

UN chemical weapons inspectors are in Syria this week to investigate claims that chemical weapons have been used there by both sides in a bloody and protracted civil war.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the shelling was intense and hit the eastern suburbs of Zamalka, Arbeen and Ein Tarma. Rami Abdul-Rahman from the SOHR says he has documented at least 100 deaths from Wednesday's attack. He says it's not clear whether the victims died from shelling or toxic gas attacks.

The Local Coordination Committees said hundreds of people, perhaps as many as 775, were killed or injured in the shelling. Such different figures are common in the immediate aftermaths of attacks in Syria.

Videos and images that appeared to show victims with symptoms consistent with a chemical attack surfaced online Wednesday, although their veracity could not be immediately confirmed.

Yeah, but these guys have learned. They're going to get the UN to say it. That way it can't be blamed on them. How do you do that? Use chemical weapons right when the UN inspectors happen to be there, and hope that nobody is smart to realize the Syrian regime would never do that (and probably went to great lengths to make sure none of them were even anywhere around, much less being actively used).

Obama Deeply Concerned After Syrians Gassed To Death On White House Lawn

Quote:
Assuring the nation that he was “carefully monitoring the situation,” President Barack Obama expressed his “deep concern” this morning after several hundred Syrian men, women, and children were discovered gassed to death overnight on the White House lawn. “The use of chemical weapons on the South Lawn, or anywhere on the White House grounds, is unacceptable, and I strongly condemn these actions,” read a statement issued by the president, which failed to acknowledge his previous stern warnings that any poison gas attacks on civilians within 400 feet of the Oval Office would cross a “red line” that would draw an international response.

“We have called on the United Nations to conduct a full investigation of the incident, and pending their findings over the upcoming weeks and months, the appropriate parties will be held accountable. For now, our thoughts and prayers go out to those innocent families down by the south fountain and jogging track who are grieving the loss of loved ones today.” The latest attack comes more than two years into a bloody conflict on the White House grounds that has seen tens of thousands of Syrian civilians brutally massacred in the Rose Garden, the South Portico, and the Lincoln Bedroom.

Obama is moving guided missile cruisers within striking range of Damascus. This should provide the needed distraction from the NSA scandal, the IRS scandal, the targeting AP journalists scandal, the Benghazi scandal, the failed economic stimulus, the cave-in of Iraq following our abrupt and public withdrawal, him losing the war in Afghanistan, and his waffling and stammering as the Middle East policy he and Hillary put together turns into a total failure.

Just blow some shit up, in some cowardly attacks from a safe distance. It doesn't matter that everbody knows it almost certainly wasn't the Syrian military who used chemical weapons widely for the first time right under the noses of UN chemical weapons inspectors -- that this would be counter to their interests. Just blow some shit up, and get people nervous about war with Russia, so nobody is looking at that man behind the curtain. Putin probably has a similar need for a distraction, so this will work for him too (especially now that you "have more flexibility" to make concessions in other areas).

Haven't heard much about Fast & Furious. Gotti is no longer deserving of the title Teflon Don.

Yeah, and Guantanamo has apparently slipped off the public's radar once again as well. "Squirrel!"
