Just what the title says. My burner is in dmesg here..

Code:
dmesg | grep DVD
[    1.775169] hdc: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-118L, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
[    3.971314] ide-cd: hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM DVD-R/RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2000kB Cache

And cdrecord -scanbus returns..
Code:

scsibus1001:
        1001,0,0 100100) 'PIONEER ' 'DVD-RW  DVR-118L' '1.01' Removable CD-ROM
        1001,1,0 100101) *
        1001,2,0 100102) *
        1001,3,0 100103) *
        1001,4,0 100104) *
        1001,5,0 100105) *
        1001,6,0 100106) *
        1001,7,0 100107) *
mike@gentoo ~ $

But when I start k3b I cant get it to see the burner. Any suggestions? Thanks. I should also note that searching for help says I need to enable HALD but hald has long since been deprecated shoudlnt udev be finding this?

Maybe your user needs to be in the cdrom and/or cdrw group...

Did you do a fresh installation or did it work before?

I Definitely didn't put my user in the cdrom group, let me do that and post back. And this is a spankin new installation. Thanks. edit-- No that didnt do it for me, I didnt think it would as previously I tried doing it as root for a second and it still didnt work.. Where would it be in /dev? looks like /dev/hdc.

ide-cd: are you using the deprecated ATA device driver and no libata driver?

What gives lspci?

I think I have most of it it not both selected i just tried enabling shit until things worked sometimes because im almost barely over my head here especially since it seems they are moving everything around a lot lately! But heres lspci and a snippet from make menuconfig. If you want to take the time to tell me what I should and should not have selected id appreciate it. I have an IDE disk which is gentoo and my burner and two sata drives for storage. I can do most of the kernel hacking myself but it does get tedious with a lot of it shifting and being deprecated etc. right now i have all my stuff working except my cdrom but the kernel does notice it.

I did that and it caused a kernel panic I had to reboot the old kernel. Think it mentioned a mount root error

seems, that another kernel module was missing.

Code:
zgrep CONFIG_ATA /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_ATA=y
# CONFIG_ATA_NONSTANDARD is not set
CONFIG_ATA_VERBOSE_ERROR=y
CONFIG_ATA_ACPI=y
CONFIG_ATA_SFF=y
CONFIG_ATA_BMDMA=y
CONFIG_ATA_PIIX=y

Code:
grep CONFIG_IDE .config
# CONFIG_IDE is not set

independently from the libata/pata driver you should use, check permissions of the drive and put yourself in cdrom & cdrw group as massimo told you. I think plugdev and disk are also candidates. You have to login again.
Then I would read this two links:
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=153&t=111168&sid=a4072771f4d6e64dc35f3307c2eebace
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-858965-highlight-.html
Have you already tried:
Code:
$ solid-hardware list
$ udisks --enumerate

The kernel panics results from the new device name, I think. There should be sda and sdb (instead of hda and hdb) for disks and sr0 for cdrom - you would need some device renaming in /etc/fstab. Also check menu.lst.

/proc/config.gz results from

General setup
<*> Kernel .config support

you can also grep in /usr/src/linux/.config

solid-hardware looks ok. Probably udisks (emerge) is not necessary.

Ok im in a bootable kernel again. heres this.

Code:
gentoo mike # zgrep CONFIG_ATA /proc/config.gz
# CONFIG_ATARI_PARTITION is not set
# CONFIG_ATALK is not set
# CONFIG_ATA_OVER_ETH is not set
CONFIG_ATA=y
# CONFIG_ATA_NONSTANDARD is not set
# CONFIG_ATA_VERBOSE_ERROR is not set
# CONFIG_ATA_ACPI is not set
CONFIG_ATA_SFF=y
CONFIG_ATA_BMDMA=y
CONFIG_ATA_PIIX=y
# CONFIG_ATA_GENERIC is not set
gentoo mike #

But I no longer have my sata disks because i believe i didnt enable this.

Code:

  │ │                  [ ]   Support for SATA (deprecated; conflicts with libata SATA driver)                   │ │

and in order to get the kernel bootable i had to enable these..

the sata devices should come from:
Device Drivers --->
<*> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers --->
put the intel stuff in your kernel.

check for this module and build it into kernel (not as module)
Code:
#
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller (rev 02)

There was it was called onboard ide operate mode and it was set to enhanced. but when i selected compatibility mode the kernel panicked again I had to set it back. There was nothing for just the cdrom though.
