First Gentoo install kernel questions

Specs:
x86_64 (amd64), in a VirtualBox machine.

I've gotten a so far successful setup of my first Gentoo

In the handbook I'm up to chapter 7.d Kernel Modules. I run the find command, and it gives me 1050 kernels.

My question is, how do I know what modules to load? Is there a default file somewhere it will load even if I don't edit /etc/conf.d/modules? Or is there a guide to using lspci to load the correct modules? Is it good practice to set them as kernel version specific, or more generic? How generic?

I have all these questions because the handbook literally tells me nothing at all and then rolls right into setting up the system network, fstab and stuff, and no guideline as to what modules do what.

Skip the module loading. Its done automatically now so there is no need.

The Doctor is over simplifying a little. Everything you need to boot will auto load, so there is no need to populate /etc/conf.d/modules to get started.
Not everything will work this way so you will need a little trial and error.

As a long time Linux user I can tell it keeps changing. For instance, I keep FAT support as module. There have been times when it gets loaded every boot while there is no FAT devices present. There have been times when I had to load it by hand in order to read a USB stick. There have been times when it gets autoloaded when needed (I really liked that). A few months ago my MythTV backend configuration became invalid because modules for some TV cards stopped autoloading at boot ... go figure.
