|
|
Hello today I did a fresh installation of gentoo (again) and installed with gnome following this guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml
That went really well and everything worked out of the box. Yay
Now when reading the forums I see people talking about gnome 3.6 and 3.8.
When entering
Code: | gnome-about --gnome-version |
It tells me:
Code: |
Version: 2.32.1
Distributor: Gentoo
Build Date: 08/18/13
|
Why is that? |

You are running stable version, they are running unstable (testing) versions. Having seen Gnome 3 on an Ubuntu installation, I would advise masking out Gnome 3. |

I read the sticky thread

GNOME 3.2 in Gentoo: answers to common general questions

in the meantime. So no stable version of gnome 3 for gentoo any time soon.
Well I installed Fedora 19 on another harddrive, which runs gnome 3.
I do not know if I like the "search for the application I want to run" thingy - may be nice to have on a tablet or on small displays where space for menus is limited. For my personal taste I like the menus of gnome 2 better, feels faster and I see what else is installed.
In gnome 3 this overview is missing somehow - or I have not figured out where I can see what applications are installed.
I cannot comment on stability though - have not tested long enough.
I read something about a bug with the color scheme and nvidia drivers or something, I am running nvidia drivers in fedora and have not noticed something odd so far.

PPS: Fedora partitioning seems to have been developed by someone with sanity in short supply. |

| Perhaps not.

Thanks for the answer,
I on my part skimmed the thread you provided and must confess, that I am not as proficient with the inner workings of gentoo, as would be required to fully understand everything discussed there.
Could you please be so kind, to sum up in one or two sentences, what was decided regarding gnome and what consequences are about to follow.

PS: What is meant when the term "upstream or upstreaming" is used, I am not sure I get it. |

From a Gentoo-perspective, "KDE" is upstream, "Gnome" is upstream. If there is an obvious bug in the sourcecode, it's upstream that should provide a fix.
The other way around: If a user reports a bug to e.g. kde through bugs.kde.org, and it turns out that there was a malicious patch applied in an ebuild that triggers the behaviour, the kde-dev talks about "Gentoo" as "downstream". |

Currently Gnome 3.x is unstable. We're working to make Gnome 3.8.x stable. |

The objection that I and many others have is that Gnome 3 like Windows 8 is more appropriate to a cell phone than a desktop or laptop computer. There is a project called MATE that is forking Gnome 2. Unfortunately, zenity and gobject-introspection, necessary to Gnome 2 block it's installation, so you have to abandon Gnome 2 to try it. I'm working on my own desktop that mimics Windows 95 using wxGTK over X11. So far, I like the look and feel which probably means I'm violating some d**n software patent.
